Today is a shockingly good day!
Dec. 9th, 2005 11:29 amI just logged on to my student loan account to pay my bill for December. I usually just pay with the coupon book, but I'm out of checks at the moment and I didn't want to forget to pay it, so I went to the website, which I hadn't done in months at least. Imagine my surprise when, on the Account Summary screen, the status line said: "in student deferment 9/05 - 1/06". I was totally shocked. I never filled out any forms for a deferment. I'm only taking two classes this semester. So I clicked on the deferment information link, and found out that some schools automatically send their students' status to student loan companies, and when that happens you don't need to fill out any forms because the deferment will go through automatically. Apparently Harvard Extension considers someone taking two classes to be a full-time student. Neat! So I am (and have been) making payments all this fall that are like extra payments. I forget, am I still accruing interest with a deferment? I signed up for two classes next term as well, so the same thing should happen again. It would rock if there was no interest accruing, but even still, that's pretty cool.
This morning was also great because I walked to work. If you live in Boston or have glanced at the weather channel in the past day or so, you know that multiple inches of snow are currently falling all over the city. Walking in it was actually nice! I have a few theories. First, I think I expect it to be colder when it's snowing, so I bundle up more; however, at least in Boston, it's usually colder when it's *not* snowing, because sometimes it gets too cold to snow here. So the extra bundling keeps me extra warm. And even if it is really cold, or windy, I'm either going Ooh Snow! and trying to catch it on my tongue, or else paying more attention to not slipping and falling, so I don't notice the cold as much. Plus walking in the snow is excellent exercise. Plus I just didn't want to get on the T this morning, because I was all bundled up and then I'd get into the station and it would be so warm in there, I'd get all sweaty, and then I'd be packed on the train with all the other sweaty bundled-up people, and I just wasn't in the mood. It was so much nicer to get slightly sweaty doing some good honest snow stomping. And the snow looks really pretty when it's falling. So I arrived at work late, but pleased with myself. Walking in the snow may be one of the only things I actually enjoy about Boston in winter.
