This was a fabulous little YA novel! I really enjoyed this. The premise and plot are a little predictable: Will, an orphan raised as a ward of the local baron, turns 15 and is given the chance to apprentice into a trade. Though Will would like to go to Battleschool to become a knight, he is judged too small, and the myterious Ranger, Halt, chooses Will as his apprentice. As Will learns new skills, a dangerous assassin threatens the kingdom, including Will's new master.
Obviously we know that Will's going to pull through and save the day, learning a lot about himself in the process, but Will is smart and funny and he has integrity. Other characters, like Halt, the Baron, and Horace, add more depth to the story. Highly recommended, and I'm really looking forward to reading the rest of the series.
(Interestingly, my dad got me into these--he's read the first five books, is starting book 6, and is considering ordering 7 and 8 from Australia if my mom doesn't catch him first.)
