TV update / movies: Sleepless in Seattle

Last night I made F sit through Sleepless in Seattle. He'd never seen it, and, well, I'm nine months pregnant. He also made me a pitcher of virgin pina colada. He is a good man. There was a lot I didn't remember about the movie, but mostly it rewarded my expectations, and F agreed that it was a fun movie (which I'm interpreting to mean that he didn't think it entirely sucked). I think this means that, in the contest of "What do you mean you never saw that?!", I'm on tap for Rocky next.

In TV news, we watched the last season of The Wire. That show is completely amazing and I'm so sorry it's over. Now I have to get my kicks from things like this.

We also finished season 3 of Torchwood. Damn, the last season is completely worth sitting through the first two seasons: really solid, tight storytelling, and a plausible conclusion. Although my favorite moments in the whole show are the moments with Spike. It just entertains me so much that the accent he did for Buffy is solid enough that he can take it on a British TV show. Yay for Spike.

Finished season 2 of Sherlock, too. So much love for that show, but the last episode was a major WTF. Not sure how they're going to pull that out, but looking forward to a new season at some point.

I finished the first season of the UK Being Human, which I liked very much. Good character development over the course of the season. (I also loved that George got a guest spot on Sherlock in the Hound of Baskerville episode, which was just ridiculously appropriate.)

Still working on ST: TNG (halfway through season 4) and My So-Called Life. I've been watching the current season of Design Star too, which is frivolous fun. And I don't remember if I mentioned that we watched the end of the current season of Community? The video game episode was the best pretty much ever, but overall I was really happy with the end of the season's story arc. Concerned about next season, of course, but we'll see what happens.

books 2012: The Help, by Kathryn Stockett

My mom lent this to me a while ago and I've been meaning to read it, but I have a long walk to the train and it's hardback and heavy. Really glad I've read it now - I really enjoyed this book and found the three main characters to be smart, relatable, and fun to read. From my perspective as a white woman, I thought Stockett handled the race issues with sensitivity and honesty. Overall, recommended - it kept me captivated all day.

books 2012: Twigs and Knucklebones, by Sarah Lindsay

I've been a fan of Lindsay's for a while, but I absolutely loved this poetry collection and it appealed to me even more than her older work. As an archaeology geek, the long middle section about the Kingdom of Nab got me both excited and teared up. Lindsay gets right to the heart of so many of the issues I love about archaeology: who were the people who left these things behind? What can we learn about them, and what will we never know? What stories have been lost?
