supercheesegirl: (books - hero and the crown)
Susanna borrowed these books from me for like two years, but she finally gave them back a few weeks ago, and I was all excited to read them through again. I can never decide which one is my favorite, but this is the first one I read (though not really the first one in the series).

The Dark is Rising is one of those series where I feel that strict series chronology is overrated. I have never cared for Over Sea, Under Stone (although I like those characters well enough when they show up in Green Witch), and I think The Dark is Rising is, overall, a much better start into the series.

My original set didn't even include Over Sea, Under Stone, so the first few times I read them I kept wondering about the Drew children's previous trip to Cornwall when they found the grail. I found the book a few years later, and it's even the one from the same printing as my own set which for some reason didn't include it, and it answered a lot of questions for me. But you're definitely right about liking those kids better later. I like Jane especially, in both Greenwitch and Silver On The Tree. And it always made me sad that the Drews don't get to remember any of it, in the end. But then the ending of SonT isn't altogether satisfying for me anyway.
