A solid YA novel, with decent characters who are realistically terrified (unlike in some books, where the hero children are always courageous). However, I did not like the ending. I thought the ending was abrupt, harsh, and sad. But I can't imagine another way for this book to end. The unicorn had to die, of course it had to die, and the children were needed in order for Elidor to be healed, but that doesn't make it okay. I really respect what Garner has done here, the way he portrays a harsher view of mythology and magic. However, respecting the book and liking it are not the same thing.
