books 2010: The Hunger Games (#1), by Suzanne Collins

Everyone's been talking about this, and I can honestly say that it deserves the hype. This book was incredibly compelling. There are some images from it that I can't get out of my brain. I'm really looking forward to the rest of the series.

My only caveat is that, for a YA novel, it's pretty gory. The premise is basically that 24 teenagers are locked in an arena and forced to kill each other for reality TV. This book isn't for the younger end of the YA spectrum; there are some really upsetting scenes. But Katniss as a character is really well written, and her thoughtfulness about the events in the book makes those events meaningful.

Sounds almost like an adaptation of Battle Royale. I may have to check it out, thanks!

I read the first last Saturday, the second on Sunday, finishing it Monday morning. Now working on the third, which I can't get through as fast because with work and everything I can't ignore the rest of my life to read.
