i think my favorite of these lists is probably the second one. the first list is largely a bunch of books by dead white guys, and it leaves out so much--of course any list like this would leave out a lot, but the omissions here are pretty much unforgiveable. the second list includes many of the books represented on the first list, but books by women and books by other sorts of writers (Tolkien, Douglas Adams) are also represented, which is important. i think list three is also important, because the "great novels" are not always going to be the most well-loved novels, but i also doubt that three hundred years from now our descendants will still be reading Terry Pratchett. not that he's not good, but he's not necessarily the stuff of classics (i've also never read any of his books represented here).
on another note: go, Salman Rushdie! i've never heard of your book, but it's holding strong right at the end of all three lists. maybe i'll go pick that up.
and i'm not just reading fantasy lately; i am making an effort to read things i should be reading. i just started A Picture of Dorian Gray. i just hope i get it finished before i go pick up the paperback of Kushiel's Avatar, which is due out tomorrow. :)

i think my favorite of these lists is probably the second one. the first list is largely a bunch of books by dead white guys, and it leaves out so much--of course any list like this would leave out a lot, but the omissions here are pretty much unforgiveable. the second list includes many of the books represented on the first list, but books by women and books by other sorts of writers (Tolkien, Douglas Adams) are also represented, which is important. i think list three is also important, because the "great novels" are not always going to be the most well-loved novels, but i also doubt that three hundred years from now our descendants will still be reading Terry Pratchett. not that he's not good, but he's not necessarily the stuff of classics (i've also never read any of his books represented here).
on another note: go, Salman Rushdie! i've never heard of your book, but it's holding strong right at the end of all three lists. maybe i'll go pick that up.
and i'm not just reading fantasy lately; i am making an effort to read things i should be reading. i just started A Picture of Dorian Gray. i just hope i get it finished before i go pick up the paperback of Kushiel's Avatar, which is due out tomorrow. :)
