Had a nice class at Enso this morning. Usually Lisie teaches this class but today Rich taught it. I hadn't had a class with him before--he was pretty good. Slow flow is always really challenging for me.

That makes 115 yoga practices for the year. I'm satisfied with that.

A relaxed practice this morning--I'm planning to go to the slow flow class I like at Enso tomorrow so I didn't want to overdo it. I felt kind of melancholy during the practice, though. I got to thinking about things that make me sad and then I couldn't stop.

In addition, F gave me a Wii fitness game for Christmas, so we tried that and each got a 20-minute workout. I think the game will be very good for F since he doesn't really have a gym he can go to right now.

In other news, both of our tubs and both toilets filled up with filthy water today and overflowed. We had to call maintenance. There was bailing of water out the windows, and mopping up of water with various towels, and a shop-vac was involved, and then we had to clean the whole house. And because we hadn't done floors in a while, we had to sweep the whole house first, then because of the unsanitary conditions we had to steam-mop, then wet-swiffer to ensure that the ick was truly gone. Now the floors are indeed clean. It took a lot of wine to get the floors this clean, let me tell you.

Just a short practice this morning. Weights, squats, strength-building stuff. I was kind of lazy about it but at least I did something.

I don't really post my dreams here anymore but I've had some whoppers lately:

Yesterday morning I woke up out of a dream where F had suddenly died, his eyes just rolled up and he dropped to the ground. I had to call and tell people what had happened and try to make plans. At one point I was out at a diner with my high school girlfriends, like we've done a million times before, but I was so full of this huge sorrow. When I woke up I literally burrowed into F's chest and cried, I was so relieved that he was okay.

This morning I dreamed we had a baby. Read more... )

A decent yoga practice this morning: weights and standing work. I was really distracted, though, because I kept thinking about the Doctor Who episode we watched last night. It was the one about Madame de Pompadour, and it made me really sad. I was thinking about it in the middle of the night and couldn't stop thinking about it during yoga. (I just read, though, that the actress who played her actually dated David Tennant for a few years, and for some reason that made me feel better about the whole thing. I'm also consoling myself by looking up books about Madame de Pompadour because she sounds genuinely interesting regardless of whether she was ever attacked by clockwork automatons from the future.)

Today F made tea to have with breakfast and my tea was still hot so I spent a few minutes just sitting comfortably on my yoga mat sipping tea before I started my practice. Then, because of the tea, I started out with some seated poses. Then four sun salutations, forward bends, balance poses (my tree is still solid, but my dancer is wobbly), then strength building stuff. I did my handstand prep, but I couldn't do a headstand because all the holiday wrapping things are piled against the wall where I do my headstands (I tried the other wall briefly, but I was too worried about kicking the artwork so I stopped). I hadn't done most of this stuff in a few weeks so it was good to get back to it.

I have a few days off over the holidays so I'm hoping to get some studio class time in. I'd like to make it to an official count of 4000 minutes for the year, which might be a stretch, but should be doable if I hit a few studio classes (since actual classes are always longer than I can give myself at home). If I don't hit 4000 I'm not going to stress about it. One positive point is that, with it being the holidays, it would probably be a good idea to make more time for yoga to keep myself relaxed (and to keep the holiday food from hitting me too hard).

I've gone jogging 38 times in 2010, and similarly, I'd like to make it to 40 times--that would mean I'd gone jogging once a week over 75% of the year. But at this point I'm not going to kill myself to do it, and I'm not going jogging in weather under 40 degrees. I'm proud of my record for this year regardless.

I wasn't feeling much like doing yoga this morning but it was definitely a good thing. When I'm feeling a little sick, I think yoga is the perfect way to process all the vitamins and tylenol and nose spray through my system--I always feel at least a little better afterwards.

I didn't really feel like doing yoga this morning. I've been completely zonked in the mornings lately; my body wants the sun to be up before it wants to move. So I started with some weights, and then put on my music and did some "jammie yoga" seated stuff. Unfortunately, my "yoga - mellow tunes - 18 min" playlist was only 12 minutes long--apparently I pulled some songs off of it and never replaced them. So I got to what I knew was the last song, thought boy that was fast, and did my sivasana, only to find out afterward that it hadn't been that long of a practice. Sigh. At least I did something. Afterwards it wasn't nearly time for my shower yet so I curled up with my book for 20 minutes.

I dragged F to the Thanksgiving all-level vinyasa class at Enso. This was F's first visit and his first time meeting Adam. The class was insanely crowded, though--we counted around 35 people in the room! It was a little distracting to have so many people around, and of course Adam couldn't give any personal attention. However, it was still a good class and a good workout. F said he's never sweated like that in a yoga class, and we're both sore today.

Good yoga practice this morning. I've been slacking off lately (even before the honeymoon). Today I did weights, including some rowing-like exercises, and I also started doing the tiptoe exercise to build calf muscle--with all the yoga and cardio over the past year, plus the fact that I've haven't gone to a gym or done any kind of leg press things since maybe fall of '08, my calves have gotten skinny. It kind of weirds me out, and my favorite boots don't fit anymore, so time to build back the muscle a little. Then six sun salutations, all my standing work, squats, and some seated poses.

Our first full day in Belize! After a relaxing morning and a walk to town for lunch, F and I borrowed yoga mats from Kirsten and got in a little yoga practice out on the pier. It felt good after sitting on the plane for so long the previous day. Then it started to rain so we jumped in the ocean.

On Monday morning we took Kirsten's yoga class. It was a surprisingly long class, and Kirsten is a good teacher. We did a lot of flowing into and out of poses, a lot of reclining leg work, a lot of flat face-down backbends (can't remember the pose name), and I felt very relaxed afterwards. I remember that, while we were in the class, I could see down between the boards of the pier and could see the water moving under us--that actually made me feel a little sick so I didn't look at that again. I could have tried doing a headstand--Kirsten did one--but I was kind of terrified to do one against the railing for fear I'd kick right over the top and fall in the water. Overall it was an awesome class, so cool to do yoga right there on the pier with the ocean breeze in our faces.

Our last day at Black Rock Lodge in the jungle, we borrowed mats from the office and practiced on the palapa platform above the river. The view is amazing and really inspiring for yoga. By this point in the trip I really, really needed some yoga--it had been over a week since the class with Kirsten, and we did a lot of really active stuff in that week. Afterwards I felt sore but refreshed.

This morning I tried to get back into my habit of yoga before work. I thought it also might be nice to chill out a bit and have some calm to start my first day back at the office after the honeymoon. I started out with weights (after our kayaking adventure, I'm devising some arm exercises with the weights to strengthen my rowing/paddling muscles), squats, and four sun salutations, then moved right to the floor for some gentle stretches. Definitely some soreness, considering it had been a week since the previous practice and that week involved kayaking, biking 17 miles, and sitting on a plane and in two airports, but not as bad as I was expecting.

I could have had more time to do yoga this morning, but yesterday we had bug-sprayed a bunch of our honeymoon clothes in the yoga room. The bug sprayer kind of diffused the spray around, so I wanted to wet-swiffer the floor. I didn't want to do yoga with chemicals right next to my nose (although the bug spray is odorless when it dries, and swiffer cloths have their own chemicals, but let's not think about it too hard, the floor needed to be mopped anyway).

I feel like we are so busy right now I don't have time for anything. We relaxed a lot over the weekend (partly to nurse the looming head cold--I slept an extra three hours Monday afternoon and an extra three hours Tuesday morning), but still.

On Saturday I went to the Mindful Vinyasa workshop at Enso. I'd been really excited about this, because Adam's been reading a lot of the books I've been reading on buddhism and mindfulness, Iyengar's Light on Life, and I was really looking forward to it! It was actually scheduled for last week, October 2, and I had been staying at my parents' house so I got on the highway and drove down for the class, only to find a note on the door that it had been rescheduled for October 9. So I went this week, no big, except that I was really tired and kept falling asleep during the meditations. Adam was playing recordings of Thich Nhat Hanh and I fell asleep! I was also really wobbly on the actual yoga, couldn't hold my downward dogs very long. I was kind of embarrassed. Then Saturday night I started to develop a sore throat, and I was like, oh, that's why. I spent the weekend fighting off a head cold. I took a three-hour nap on Monday afternoon and slept in an extra three hours this morning. Yay for having sick time to burn, I guess, but anti-yay for the cold affecting my yoga. I still enjoyed the class, just not so much as I might have.
