supercheesegirl: (seasons - spring)
Lauren came back this year, so it was me, Mom, Laur, Deb, and two newcomers: Mom's friend Jen, and Jen's mom. Jen and her mom really just rode the train with Mom & Co. and then had lunch with us; they did most of the day on their own. This year's theme had to do with 100 years of the national park service, so most of the displays were US-based and outdoorsy. You wanted to hike through them. Laur kept taking pictures of ordinary-looking wildflower displays, and when I asked about it, she said her mom had taken her on a "wildflower walk" not long ago, and Laur, expecting an actual stroll to see flowers, had been wearing cute little ballet flats. She ended up getting a slog-level hike with no flowers in evidence anywhere, so she was taking pictures to demonstrate to her mother what one should see on a wildflower walk. There were plenty of very nice examples.

One of my favorite things was the chandelier tree. Lots of people were lined up to go through the center of a large tree. When you walked through it and looked up, several big shiny red chandeliers were hanging through the center of the tree. It was beautiful. There were a lot of bears and interpretations of Yosemite. One thing that was cool was an exhibit of Ansel Adams interpretations. (This must be the same exhibit that in a previous year was Disney princess interpretations.) Each artist had chosen a black and white Ansel Adams photo to interpret with plants. It was really interesting to see how they managed to create, for example, a silvery waterfall.

When we were approaching the end of the exhibits, we ended up moving mostly through the back of the hall and not seeing much of the stuff in the middle. I hadn't seen the dining rooms, which is one of my favorites, so I aimed us back into the exhibits, when Mom was all ready to start with the shopping. Then I couldn't find the dining rooms; apparently from a distance I'd seen one scene that had a table and chairs in it, but there wasn't a whole set of different dining rooms as there had been in previous years. I heard quite a bit about what a waste of time I'd caused, until I found an extremely large pink feathery-looking plant, which I photographed my mother in front of, posing her so that it looked a bit like a hat. Then I said, "There, that was worth it", and indeed, it was proclaimed to be so.

Then we went to shop. No jewelry or big-ticket items this year, just a bouquet of blue roses for Freya, who'd been talking about blue roses for some reason a week or so earlier. When she saw them on the table later that evening, I told her why I'd chosen blue, and she said, "Oh thank you, Mommy!" Not sure she actually remembered talking about them, but at least she recognized something special done just for her.
