I was in New York this weekend. Went to see my girlfriends from high school--Missi lives in Manhattan, and Rose, Laur, and Coll came up from Philly. It was nice. Saturday we walked from Missi's place at Broadway and 105th all the way down Broadway to 42nd, shopping along the way. It drizzled and sometimes rained all day Saturday, but we dealt with it admirably. Had dinner at a little italian place, then saw Fever Pitch together--I like good romantic comedies, and I have a soft spot for baseball movies, so I really liked it, and this weekend was a perfect time to see it because I seriously doubt anyone I hang out with in Boston would've been interested in seeing this movie with me. (Which sucks, because it was excellent.) Then we got ice cream from Cold Stone, which Missi and Laur and Coll had never done before, so it was worth waiting in line. Laur and Coll both picked from the suggested combinations list, but I got mint ice cream with strawberries and cookie dough. It was delicious. We were all zonked when we got back to Missi's afterwards and pretty much just passed out. Sunday morning Laur and Missi and Coll got up to go to church, and Rose and I and Missi's boyfriend Mike amused ourselves by looking up lists of previous popes on the internet (did you know there was a Pope Hilarius? And a Pope Dionysius, which just seems contradictory). Then we all went out for breakfast to Deluxe, which is just a few blocks from Missi's apartment. And I got the berry french toast which was delicious, then when we got back to Missi's I blowdried my sneakers, which were still wet from the rain on Saturday, and then caught the 4:00 Fung Wah bus back to Boston. And when I arrived home, there was pizza and Star Trek and much rejoicing.
This week there is nothing on my calendar except for 1) Chocolate Madness tomorrow, 2) new Lost on Wednesday, 3) working at Otis on Saturday, and 4) movies at Darxus's and Kris's on Sunday. Compared to last week, this is excellent. I'm going to make a hair appointment, work on my final book project, and play some Prince of Persia.
The new Ben Folds album is not spectacular. I mean, it's good and all, but it mostly sounds like just one big song. It's a pretty song, but still. I'm a little disappointed. None of these are going to be my new theme song, which is what usually happens when I get a new Ben Folds album--something strikes me really strongly and I can't stop listening to it. But there doesn't seem like much on "Songs for Silverman" that has potential to catch me like that. However. I ordered it direct from Ben's website, so I got an ep with it called "Songs for Goldfish" that is pretty excellent. Some live stuff, from both the new album and the previous few eps, and also some live stuff I hadn't heard before. Also a Lucinda Williams cover that makes me want to cry it's so beautiful, and also some radio spots he did for a station in Tokyo that are absolutely awesome. So even though he's touring right now to promote the new album, which I'm not thrilled about, I know he puts on a great live show and so I'm totally psyched to see him in Boston next week. Which I am officially now doing, because Amy's Tom had a coworker who needed to unload a ticket, so now I can go. My faith in the universe is restored.
