I think this was her first novel. It was excellent. One thing I find interesting that pops up in a lot of LeGuin's work is the significance of naming--in this book, Rocannon meets several different species on this planet who don't have names and don't really understand why things should be named. Rocannon asks them how they distinguish one mountain range, one tree, one being from another, if all of them are called by the same name, and they didn't really have an answer, maybe didn't even understand the distinction. In Earthsea, people have one name for everyday use so they can keep their true names a secret, because names have power. And her characters always seem really appropriately named to me. Anyway, this book was really good--not my favorite of hers, but a good book and a good introduction to her Hainish universe (if you've never been there--lots of her books and stories take place there).
