I was really captivated by this book. It starts in 1964, when a doctor's wife goes into labor and gives birth to twins--one a healthy boy, and the other a girl with Down's syndrome. The father gives the girl to the nurse and tells her to take the baby to an institution, and then he tells his wife the baby died. The nurse, finding the institution to be a horrible place, keeps the girl and raises her in secret. The book spans the next 25 years and shows how this secret tears the family apart.
It was a good book. Maybe a little schmaltzy toward the end, though. But I read it all the way through in pretty much one sitting, so I guess it passed the test.
