I was a zombie by the time I got home last night, so I just sat and stared at the computer and did nothing at all useful until 1:30 in the morning.
To Do, Friday 6/29:
-put baseball ticket, train schedules, museum brochure in purse
-pack a sandwich, bring a sweatshirt and my glasses
- catch the 7:38 train
- leave work at 12:15 for the museum
-be back at the office by 5 to meet J & K for dinner
-be safe coming home after the baseball game
I would have had to rush significantly to catch the 7:38 train yesterday morning--I could have done it, but I chose not to and instead watched Buffy fight the Mayor while I ate my cereal, then caught the 8:11. Therefore, because I was later getting to work, I didn't leave until 1:00, which was totally fine because I didn't need that much time in the museum.
I was so happy to go to museum yesterday. It's Penn's archaeology museum, so I'd been there several times before, but I really wanted to see the Amarna exhibit. It was pretty cool, there was definitely some neat stuff, but there were also a lot of displays that involved a chunk of stone that supposedly had someone carved on it. The Amarna exhibit dumps you directly into the gift shop, so I browsed there, then decided to head for the third floor to check out Canaan, which I don't think I'd seen before somehow. Well, I cut through South America to get there, and apparently I'd never seen the Mayan display before either! They have several stone stelae from Copan, which if you didn't know is HOTTT. I spent quite a while in there, and discovered that I don't remember a single f-ing thing from my Mayan hieroglyph class. Well, I remembered which glyphs I *should* know. That was frustrating--"There's the jaguar head! Wait, what the heck does that mean??" I remembered PAKAL, which means shield, because there's about 15 ways to write it, but that's about it. I was so disappointed because there were some really excellent examples of Mayan glyphs there, nice and clear, and I know I could have read them right out a year and a half ago. Damn. Anyway, the Canaan exhibit was really cool too. Overall I only spent about two hours in the museum but that's okay. For a while I was just walking around not reading anything, just enjoying being in a museum.
Then I walked back to my office building at Suburban Station. This is quite a long walk! A good 20+ blocks. I was pleased. But because I'd left the museum so early (at around 3:45), I had to keep walking for a while, and exploring and stuff, because I was supposed to meet Jean and Kristina at 5 and I didn't want to be too early. So I was tired when we met up. We went to the Olive Garden for dinner, and then to the Phillies game. The Phillies sucked, there were like two guys on the whole field who were actually playing and everyone else was just standing around. Those two guys were batting and getting runs and catching balls and everything, though, we were pretty impressed with them. Also, we finished Jean's crossword puzzle. And then there were fireworks after the game, and it was a really terrific show. And it took a while to get back to downtown on the subway, because of all the people, but we got there just fine and in plenty of time for me to catch the 11:31 train back home. And then I was a zombie.
To Do, Saturday/Sunday 6/30-7/1:
- try to get two loads of laundry done Saturday morning
- get gas in the car for the drive to NYC
- pick up some kind of gift and/or card for Rose and John
- mail my rent check!
- wear something cute to Rose's shower, and bring something cute to wear to Chris's party
- be careful driving to/from NYC
- successfully navigate the subway
