First book post of 2009!!
Poetry. I read this on the plane yesterday. Trethewey is one of my very favorite poets. I've loved her previous work, and this book is no exception. It won the Pulitzer, so I'm not the only one who liked it, either. The poems are beautifully crafted and rich with history, both the history of the Civil War and Trethewey's own personal history. Some of the poems are a little too neat, but the book as a whole is greater than the individual poems. It's a lovely collection. Highly recommended, for poets and non-poets alike.
Coming up in the next few days: resolutions, end-of-year meme, the proposal story, the trip to CA stories, and (hopefully) the 2008 reading roundup.
