books 2011: Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist, by Rachel Cohn and David Levithan

OK, this was absolutely adorable. Told as stream-of-consciousness, in chapters alternating between Nick's and Norah's viewpoints, this is the story of one crazy night and how Nick and Norah meet and fall in love. This was a lot of fun to read. It's a YA novel, but I don't know that I would want my theoretical teenage daughter reading it--there's a lot of sex and a lot of bad language, besides the fact that these kids are in high school but their parents don't care that they're out all damn night, in NYC no less--but Nick and Norah are good kids and we want to see them make each other happy. Cohn and Levithan completely nail that electricity of falling in love and having an endless night of discovering this amazing new person. It was really fun to read this and remember what that was like.

I saw the movie and really enjoyed it. If I had more time for reading books, I would probably read this as well. The movie wasn't the most brilliant thing in the world but it met my expectations as a pleasant diversion. I don't really know how much it compares to the book.

From your description of the movie, it's probably just like the book: nothing brilliant but a pleasant diversion nonetheless. I plan on checking out the movie at some point!
