supercheesegirl: (doctor who - brilliant)
We watched the last episode of Better Off Ted. It was a totally normal episode, better than some, worse than others, and ended with a great Linda/Lem/Phil moment in the lab. No closure at all, but it was an awesome show and didn't really need closure--it's almost better that we left them at just a regular moment.

Continuing slowly with Doctor Who s4 (slowly because I want to savor it, I love it so much). Although now we're midway through the two-parter where Martha comes back and gets cloned, so we'll probably watch the next one pretty soon.

Missi lent me the first two seasons of Star Trek Next Gen. In return I lent her the first two seasons of Buffy. Yay for shows, and yay for having an excellent excuse to get together again soon. We've watched the first two episodes of TNG (Encounter at Farpoint, and The Naked Now), and it is partly worse than I was expecting and partly not as bad as I was expecting. I was surprised that The Naked Now was the second freakin' episode, but I thought it was hilarious. "Data, thank God you're still functional." "Fully!" I'm really going to enjoy this rewatch. F is humoring me and I hope he will grow to love it at least a little bit.

On Saturday night we watched The Social Network. I thought it was really compelling and a good movie (and go Justin Timberlake in a serious role). F and I agreed that it wasn't as good as The King's Speech. We added Inception to our Netflix queue. We haven't been watching a lot of movies lately, but it seems like curling up with a movie after a yoga teacher training weekend will be a good idea, so hopefully we'll be watching movies a little more often. (Still need to see Black Swan, The Fighter, and True Grit, at least, to catch up a little bit on the 2010 Oscar nominees--and hopefully if we keep watching movies more often, next year we'll be a little ahead of things.)

When I re-watched Season 1 with Corey I cringed a little at the utter cheesiness of some of the episodes. I remembered them being better. Maybe they were better in 1989- haha. By the end of the season I think the show was steadily and consistently better.

Encounter at Farpoint was SO cheesy in places. Plus there were moments that didn't make any sense plot-wise or timing-wise, like we have 24 hours until Q comes back, so let's spend 11 of them sleeping with our thumbs up our asses before we start thinking about the actual problem, which takes us what seems like three days to solve, and then we're afraid that Q is going to destroy humanity any second now, so Picard has to go apologize to Bev for no reason before actually going to do something about this. Just sort of odd, and a lot of "Hey, HERE are our CHARACTERS, aren't you pleased to meet them!!" If it were launching now I don't think people would like it, but I know it's going to get so much better. Glad to hear it should even out later in this season.

I agree modern audiences would not be as patient with TNG if it were a new show released now. Thankfully, I remember that it only gets better from Season 1! The overarching concepts of the show are timeless, but the show itself doesn't hold up as well as I would like.

I really enjoyed True Grit and I wasn't expecting to since I don't really care for westerns. It took a while to get used to the speech patterns, but the actors are wonderful.

Good to hear, thanks! I've heard great things about that movie.

I'm very excited for you to watch Inception.

Okay. I'll let you know how it goes--I keep hearing totally conflicting reports, like "This movie is awesome" versus "This movie was so bad and I just didn't get it". My colleague didn't get it so intensely that she thought she should watch it again even though she hated it, just to see if she might get it the second time. I'll be interested to see what I think.
