Full title: I Should Be Extremely Happy in Your Company: A Novel of Lewis and Clark
I've had this novel on my shelf for a long time and just picked it up at random last week. I was delighted to find it a sweeping, epic story, beautifully and powerfully written, with believable and relatable characters. The novel tells the story of Lewis and Clark's expedition to explore the Louisiana territory in search of a northwest water passage across the continent. The story is told largely from Lewis's perspective, but the other main characters, like Clark, Sacagawea, and Charbonneau, all take turns narrating as well. Not knowing much of the actual history, I found myself heartbroken at the ending, but I think that's a sign of how good this book is. Hall has made the story truly live, has taken the cardboard cutouts of names and dates from our history books and created real people out of them. In short, I loved it.
