supercheesegirl: (star trek - oh squee indeed)
Almost finished with season 1 of ST:TNG. It got shockingly better as we went on. I loved the mid-season moment where the show had obviously just been approved for another season so they started writing long-term plotlines (i.e., Wesley applying to the Academy and not getting in). "Skin of Evil" was kind of a throwback to the early part of the season, in that it didn't have as much emotional resonance as other episodes did, even with the major event that happens in the episode; last five minutes were just saccharine. F and I are having a lot of fun acting like 12-year-old boys as we watch: giggling every time he says "Captain's Log", substituting obscene dialogue for anything anyone says, etc. It's a show that really lends itself to that. Two more episodes to go and then we take a break.

Watched the Doctor Who Christmas special with the Cybermen in Victorian London. I liked it a lot, and my little heart was all warmed by the end of it. (Not sure how the Cyberking was killed just by a chick screaming, though.) We ordered Planet of the Dead from Netflix, so hopefully we'll be watching that this weekend.

In movie news, we watched Salt last week. It is not a movie that anyone with a brain should watch. The whole Russian-spy-planted-in-childhood premise is just a stretch, and it's hard to know what the heck her motivations are at any given time. I feel like, if a character is the movie's eponymous hero, we should know what she's trying to do, but it seemed like she changed allegiances at least three times--by the end, her actions made consistent sense, but as we were watching it was like "So she isn't a Russian spy. No wait she is. Or she isn't? Why is she doing that?"

We also watched Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World. I absolutely adored it. The concept, the video game effects, awesome, loved it. I found Scott himself to be a little vapid and annoying, but he was well supported by every single other character. I kept debating about who was my favorite. I think I'm settling on gay Wallace, because he had the best mid-battle one-liners, but Vegan Todd cracked me up, and the chick who works everywhere in town was hilarious too.

Angelina started out as a decent actress in some very promising TV mini-series and made for TV films. I know she won an Award back before time began for not being Winona Ryder ;)

Unfortunately now she runs and jumps and shoots things all while pouting. If a person goes into any of her films knowing this they will not be disappointed.

Ashley Judd seemed to become her alter ego there for a while. Much running and jumping but with some actual characterization thrown in for those of us who require a bare minimum of plot. Plus she suffered well.

Maybe that is the problem. Angelina does not suffer. She goes straight into killing and maiming without the requisite putting on the big girl panties moments . . .

You two sound like you are having such fun just being together. I love reading your posts :)

I actually really liked Angelina in the Lara Croft Tombraider movies. Those were really fun, and based on a video game so you know going into it that it's going to silly. The Salt movie was billed as being more like Bourne Identity, though, and the Bourne movies do have actual plot, so Salt was a disappointment.

Your comment on suffering is interesting. In Salt, a major plot point is that Angelina suffers a lot, on several occasions, and needs to cover up her feelings in order to survive. Jason Bourne, on the other hand, has time to feel what's going on and usually has a confidante, which makes him a lot more relatable.

We have so much fun. :) I hope you're having lots of fun down in TN!

Gumby & I have been working through ST:TNG and it was ASTOUNDING how much better season 2 was than season 1 (for the most part). We're in season 3 now, and there are episodes in here that I would have sworn were later in the series, 'cause they really are just so good.

I really really hate "Skin of Evil" not so much for the major event, but it's just an aweful episode all around. I really had forgotten how bad season 1 was, and how poorly the Tashsa character was conceptualized: anyone that prone to questioning orders & having emotional reactions would NEVER become head of security on ANY federation ship, let alone the flag ship!

Man, I could go on... but still <3 TNG :)

The first half of s1 really is pretty bad, but it's getting better by leaps and bounds. Excited about s2, though we might take a break and watch another season of The Wire first.

Agree about Tasha's characterization. Similarly, it's consistently getting on my nerves that Beverly is characterized as wishy washy and emotional and in love with Picard. Maybe it's her acting too, I don't know, but I think they could've written her better. A real starship doctor wouldn't behave the way they've written her.

I so loved Scott Pilgrim vs. The World. Everything about it. I had to show Anya the Vegan Police scene.

"It's milk and eggs, bitch."

I near peed my pants when it was revealed that Todd gets his powers from his veganism. Just brilliant. I loved the effects, the video game nods, the extra life, everything.

We're watching Planet of the Dead next too! I'm rewatching 9th Doctor now too (I'm just going in reverse order for some reason) and Mike is rewatching everything he can on Netflix (on 3rd Doctor but I don't know if he's watching everything or just picking and choosing). There's just so much Doctor!

I haven't seen the Scott Pilgrim movie, but the book are great. If you haven't read them you should. They're really quick, but fun.
