Almost finished with season 1 of ST:TNG. It got shockingly better as we went on. I loved the mid-season moment where the show had obviously just been approved for another season so they started writing long-term plotlines (i.e., Wesley applying to the Academy and not getting in). "Skin of Evil" was kind of a throwback to the early part of the season, in that it didn't have as much emotional resonance as other episodes did, even with the major event that happens in the episode; last five minutes were just saccharine. F and I are having a lot of fun acting like 12-year-old boys as we watch: giggling every time he says "Captain's Log", substituting obscene dialogue for anything anyone says, etc. It's a show that really lends itself to that. Two more episodes to go and then we take a break.
Watched the Doctor Who Christmas special with the Cybermen in Victorian London. I liked it a lot, and my little heart was all warmed by the end of it. (Not sure how the Cyberking was killed just by a chick screaming, though.) We ordered Planet of the Dead from Netflix, so hopefully we'll be watching that this weekend.
In movie news, we watched Salt last week. It is not a movie that anyone with a brain should watch. The whole Russian-spy-planted-in-childhood premise is just a stretch, and it's hard to know what the heck her motivations are at any given time. I feel like, if a character is the movie's eponymous hero, we should know what she's trying to do, but it seemed like she changed allegiances at least three times--by the end, her actions made consistent sense, but as we were watching it was like "So she isn't a Russian spy. No wait she is. Or she isn't? Why is she doing that?"
We also watched Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World. I absolutely adored it. The concept, the video game effects, awesome, loved it. I found Scott himself to be a little vapid and annoying, but he was well supported by every single other character. I kept debating about who was my favorite. I think I'm settling on gay Wallace, because he had the best mid-battle one-liners, but Vegan Todd cracked me up, and the chick who works everywhere in town was hilarious too.

Ashley Judd seemed to become her alter ego there for a while. Much running and jumping but with some actual characterization thrown in for those of us who require a bare minimum of plot. Plus she suffered well.
Maybe that is the problem. Angelina does not suffer. She goes straight into killing and maiming without the requisite putting on the big girl panties moments . . .
You two sound like you are having such fun just being together. I love reading your posts :)

In Salt, a major plot point is that Angelina suffers a lot, on several occasions, and needs to cover up her feelings in order to survive. Jason Bourne, on the other hand, has time to feel what's going on and usually has a confidante, which makes him a lot more relatable.
We have so much fun. :) I hope you're having lots of fun down in TN!

I really had forgotten how bad season 1 was, and how poorly the Tashsa character was conceptualized: anyone that prone to questioning orders & having emotional reactions would NEVER become head of security on ANY federation ship, let alone the flag ship!
Man, I could go on... but still <3 TNG :)

Similarly, it's consistently getting on my nerves that Beverly is characterized as wishy washy and emotional and in love with Picard. Maybe it's her acting too, I don't know, but I think they could've written her better. A real starship doctor wouldn't behave the way they've written her.
