F and I are almost finished with Star Trek Next Gen season 3. However, we're holding off on the last episode a little bit, because I noticed that it was a two-parter and I totally remember being traumatized by the cliffhanger when I was ten years old, so we're waiting for a time when we can watch the last s3 ep and the first s4 ep back to back. Also, it's time for Wesley to go to the Academy already.
We watched all of season 1 of Torchwood and the first two episodes of season 2. I really kind of love Torchwood. F really kind of loves making fun of Torchwood. We thought the first season was uneven, and F keeps holding it to Doctor-level standards even though it can't ever reach that height (I mean, really, what could?). First ep of s2 was really, really promising, though, because it guest-starred SPIKE. OMG. James Marsters playing a very Spike-like character, who also happens to have all that Capt-Jack-Harkness wildness that Captain Jack Harkness totally doesn't have anymore on this show. It was a great episode. Who but Marsters could pull off a British accent so well that he can go on a British TV show? I think watching Spike passionately kiss Jack Harkness may have been worth sitting through the entire first season to see.
F and I have noted two main problems with Torchwood. First is that while Jack was great as a fun side character on Doctor Who, he isn't working out so well as a leading man. He just doesn't have the same charisma when he's all burdened with the Torchwood crew. Also, Torchwood is supposed to be this elite special ops team and they're all total dumbasses. Come on, people, even I know better than the rookie mistakes you all keep making in episode after episode. However, Ianto is swiftly growing into the secret powerhouse making the whole show worth watching. Thank goodness he finally got over his cyber-bitch ex-girlfriend.
Side note, it occurred to me last night perhaps to feel a little bad for the poor actor saddled with the role of Janet the alien growly thing they keep locked up in the basement. Hours in makeup, maybe one appearance per episode, and he doesn't even get to talk. I hope he's making a decent wage.
Our To Watch queue right now includes Downton Abbey (because everyone and their moms won't freakin' shut up about it), the last season of The Wire, and Twin Peaks (I've had the box set for over a year now). And I don't know when Walking Dead is coming back, and when or if Community will be back. I'm also kind of hoping to keep up with the Celebrity Apprentice just to see George Takei ohhh-myyyyy all over The Donald. Haven't seen the first episode yet, though.

Date: 2012-02-22 03:08 pm (UTC)From:F'reals! I heard a friend mention it a few weeks ago, and suddenly it's been EVERYWHERE. Unbelievable. I'm swamped with school or I'd add it to my queue....
I was excited to read your notes on Torchwood! I stopped about halfway through S2 and never finished; I heard that Children of Earth was intolerably sad, and I don't really want to watch sad things right now. If you make it through that, I'd be interested to know what you think.
Also, I agree with this: watching Spike passionately kiss Jack Harkness may have been worth sitting through the entire first season to see.
That was TERRIFIC. :D

Date: 2012-02-22 03:50 pm (UTC)From:I'll keep you posted on our Torchwood progress! All I'd really heard about Torchwood before starting was that it was decent and the crossover eps, like when Martha Jones stops by, are worth seeing. Due to the hormonal thing I'm not really loving the idea of intolerably sad stuff either right now, but then again we watch The Wire and that can sometimes be intolerably sad too.
One thing I do love about Torchwood is their fearlessness about same-sex characters making out, especially the dudes. Any characters making out, actually, Torchwood had tons of makeouts in s1 both alien-pheramone-inspired and otherwise, but the dudely makeouts are unlike anything I've seen on any other show. I may in fact need a Torchwood makeouts icon.

Community is coming back in March from what I've read online.
Also, we just got casting info for our next show and it has a guy from Star Trek as one of the leads (Richard Poe?) I have no idea who he is, but I figured you might.

GDL has THE BEST stories about John Barrowman. John is crazy, to hear Gareth tell it.
