supercheesegirl: (heroes - hiro waffles)

I'm almost done with Vampire Diaries, and the Olympics aren't going to last forever. Poll: what should I watch next? I'm hoping for something F won't be that interested in, something not too violent (I can't handle things like Dexter anymore), and nothing with an intricate plot that relies heavily on dialogue (since my viewing experience is often interrupted by baby needs and I'm often a little distracted). Ideas?

I really enjoy Stargate: Atlantis. It's a fun show that feels somewhat Trek-y.

Thanks, I hadn't thought of Stargate. Aren't there other Stargate shows too? Is it safe to start with Atlantis if I haven't seen any of the others?

There are 3 Stargate series:

SG-1
Atlantis
Universe

You could start with SG-1, though it is 10 seasons long so it's quite a commitment. I could never really get that into SG-1, even though I have a lot of friends that like it.

How much you like SG-1 comes down to loving Richard Dean Anderson or not. If you love RDA then you'll probably enjoy SG-1 quite a bit.

I also found SG-1 to be a little on the hokey side and a lot of the stories felt like Star Trek ripoffs. I had a long conversation with Nick about it on year at D*C and Nick is a big ST fan, too, so he totally understood where I was coming from. My favorite Trek is TNG and Nick suggested I would like Atlantis better than SG-1 so I decided to give up on SG-1 (I only made it through the first 2.5 seasons). Nick was right, I looooooove Atlantis.

Atlantis is nice, too, because it's only 5 seasons so it's less of a commitment. I personally also prefer the big bads of Atlantis better than the big bads of SG-1. SG-1 has the G'ouald- beings that take over a host body. Atlantis has the Wraith- which are actually pretty cool and scary in my opinion!

That's it in a not-so-nutshell. If you're a big fan of RDA then by all means try SG-1 first! If you really love ST:TOS that may also be a reason to try SG-1 first. Otherwise I'd start with Atlantis. And no, it really doesn't matter if you haven't seen any or all of SG-1 to watch Atlantis. It would be like watching Angel if you didn't know much about Buffy. There are references back and forth sometimes but it's pretty much it's own story.

As a kid I loved Richard Dean Anderson, but I'm sure if I'd love him out of MacGyver context. I may check out Atlantis next now that I'm done with Vampire Diaries.

I loved Catherine Tate's sketch show and it has short scenes so you can get interrupted and not worry about keeping things straight. It's sadly on on disc since they took it off of streaming.

Friends have recommended IT Crowd (supposed to be better than Big Bang Theory which I don't care for) and Eureka (several friends have raved about this so it's on my list). These are both on Netflix streaming.

Haven't seen either of these, thanks!

I did not know there was a Beeb Robin Hood series. That sounds extremely promising.
