supercheesegirl: (books - hammock)
I picked this up only because it was on the share-a-book shelf at the train station, I wanted something to read, and it looked fun. It was only moderately fun; there were a lot of characters and a lot of backstory, which was confusing, and the dialogue was not fantastically written. The last two pages read like a plot summary instead of the end of a novel. I don't know if Davidson got 16 books in (16!) and just decided to start phoning it in, or whether this is pretty representative of the whole series, but I don't think I'll be picking up another mystery starring Goldy the plucky caterer.

That's a shame, because "Goldy the plucky caterer" sounds like a great basis for a mystery series. Alas, bad mysteries are just bad.

It's entirely possible that, for me coming into the series 16 books in, there was just too much backstory. But, I don't know, Agatha Christie doesn't seem to have that problem with her recurring sleuths, so it bugged me a bit. There were definitely fun things about the book, so it may be that someone starting at book # 1 ("Catering to Nobody") would really enjoy the series.
