On Friday, I went to the Flower Show with my mom, Debbie, Lois, and Lauren. I do love the Flower Show but this year fell a little flat for me. The theme was titled "Brilliant!" and it was a London theme. Didn't they just do England a few years ago? (I'm looking at the themes of past years, and apparently not, although maybe I'm thinking of "Passport to the World".) Anyway, there was a lot of foxglove, and some Beatles, a couple of yellow submarines, and a few red phoneboxes. Every hour, a series of screens mounted on Big Ben played a pastiche of British rock songs. It was like it was trying to be the Olympics or something. I would think that a theme of "Brilliant!" set in London would have inspired *someone* to do a Doctor Who exhibit, but unfortunately not. And the room was much bigger than it was in the past, which I would have thought would have been great, but instead it was just kind of overwhelming.
Best exhibits: Jack the Ripper, which was really dark and conceptual (although there were typos on the take-home postcard, argh), and the umbrellas. I liked the dining room tables, and some of the dried flower art was pretty impressive. I also liked the main view as you enter the room: the gates opening up to the giant Big Ben clock (which really didn't need to be playing British rock songs to get attention). We also enjoyed seeing the amorphophallus plant (whatever you're imagining, yes, it was just like that), which I took a picture of for Fritz.
This year, some of the judging was going on while we were there. The staff were wearing brightly colored vests that said, like "HORT AIDE" on the back, and they strung up yellow police tape to allow the judges close to the exhibit without interference from the crowd. My party, of course, decided that next year we're bringing police tape and clipboards and trying to steal a HORT AIDE vest so we can look more official.
Apparently I didn't post about the Flower Show last year. I know I went. I know I was obviously pregnant at the time. I vaguely remember using the bathroom frequently. The Flower Show website says the theme was "Hawaii: Islands of Aloha", and now that I see that, I do remember it being particularly fragrant in there. I don't really remember much else about it. That's a shame. Livejournal: posting about things so I don't forget them later.
