books 2014: Winter's Bone, by Daniel Woodrell

By the end of the first page, I was hooked. Such strong writing. Rarely am I able to see a character in a novel so clearly. Four stars only because I'm not sure how I feel about the ending (and because it kept me up all night thinking about it and I am short on goddamn sleep anyway).

I didn't read the book, but have seen the movie a few times, now, and it's just. so. good.

I can only imagine the book being as great.

Also, there's an episode of Anthony Bourdain (I forget which show) where he goes into the swamps by boat with Daniel & crew, and Daniel falls off the boat and breaks his shoulder, or something. Anthony's reaction in the show was "my god, I've killed one of my favorite authors".
