I had to wait a few weeks after finishing this book before I could post about it. I found the last two chapters really upsetting - what happened to Quentin I should have seen coming, with all the hint drops about what it means to be a hero and how Quentin discovers that the real world ain't so bad after all, but what happened to Julia was pretty devastating; I expected something horrible but not the drastic enormity of it. I lent my mom The Magicians to read and now I'm not sure I should have since she's clamoring for the second book, but I think she's likely to be less upset about it than I was? I don't know. I have a little plush fox decoration that I couldn't even look at for a week. Anyway, it's still a five-star book, and I love Josh (the "look into the silver bowl" scene was awesome). Really interested to see where Grossman takes the concluding book in the trilogy. I predict: Quentin will meet up with Jane Chatwin again! And, likely, also with Boring Richard, since pretty much everyone else we ever cared about in the magical world is in Fillory, where Quentin isn't likely to go again. If Grossman takes him back there it'll make sense structurally, because it is a trilogy, after all, but I think I want him to make Quentin figure out how to be a grown-up in his own world. I don't need to see Fillory again. But I will miss Josh. And I guess Elliot.
