supercheesegirl: (seasons - spring)
Went to the Flower Show with Mom, Debbie, and Lawanda on Friday. Lawanda was our new addition this year, as Lauren the world traveler is in Mexico right now (before jetting off to China and Japan later this month). This year's theme was "Celebrate the Movies", and there was some special nod to Disney happening as well, so many of the displays were Disney-themed.

I saw two Aladdin ones I enjoyed (one with a curtained bed in a garden; one with an Aladdin-themed outdoor dinner party) and one Narnia one that was great (the front half was a small house in the English countryside in springtime, with the door open to reveal a second door leading into a Narnian winter, just nicely done). There was a huge great Nightmare Before Christmas display with lots of details. I remember best the pumpkins made from orange roses and carnations and dusted with snow. And there were a series of small princess-inspired displays. The Rapunzel one featured a fountain of gold cascading from the ceiling; the Cinderella one had a great staircase with the lost slipper on it. The Snow White one was all red roses and a central apple. There was also, of course, a very large Frozen display, all white and sparkly. Overall, there were a lot of really nice displays this year.

Celebrity sitings: Gene London, childhood TV hero of my mom's generation, was there, with his collection of Hollywood dresses on display. It was $5 to go in to see them, but we could see Marilyn Monroe's white dress - you know, the one that billows up when she stands on a grate? - through the doorway. They had a fan on it so it would blow around continuously. So that's what happened to that dress if you ever wondered, it's owned by an elderly gay local Philly celebrity. He also had at least one of Vivien Leigh's costumes from Gone with the Wind. Dan Aykroyd was there too, selling and signing skull-shaped bottles of vodka (this is not all that odd, Danny DeVito was hawking limoncello here a few years ago). Finally, my mom saw Jill from QVC and was delighted.

Lunch: Usually I get the veg sandwich or the veggie patty, but this year I got the chicken arugula salad, with the chicken on the side. Some of it was used by Lawanda on her side salad and the rest went home to Patrick in my mom's purse. The arugula salad had a really nice lemony dressing, cranberries, orange slices, and blue cheese. It was delicious.

Shopping: A lot of new booths this year, which was pretty exciting. I really liked one booth that made jewelry from fruit that was freeze-dried in some way, and my mom got me a necklace for my birthday. Then at the very next booth I absolutely fell in love with moon necklaces. They take a photo of the moon and put it in a charm for a necklace, and they had books of dates so you could look up what the moon looked like on a particular date. I now have a beautiful necklace of what the moon looked like on the night my daughter was born (6 descending, whatever that means).

I thought Marilyn's dress was in the Smithsonian but I'm wrong: http://www.smithsonianmag.com/arts-culture/hollywood-on-exhibit-128925023/?all

However, it sounds like officially, Debbie Reynolds owns the "real" dress. Knowing movie-making, there's usually more than one copy of a costume, so possibly both dresses are "real."

That said, once you know the incredibly disturbing story of the aftermath of Marilyn shooting that scene, it's pretty hard to enjoy the dress, even though it is gorgeous.

Well, I didn't actually see the costume collection, just peered in the door at it. It could be that there was an explanatory plaque that I missed that would clear this right up. :)

I do not know the incredibly disturbing aftermath story. Should I?

TW for Domestic violence:

Hmm, it's a "do I want to know" thing for me... Basically, her husband beat her for that scene in the Seven Year Itch (& other times, too).

The part about jealousy & DV starts after the second picture (the first of Marilyn & Joe).
