Rothfuss is still telling a compelling story here - I still feel it's moving along too slowly, but it's a good story. Female characters definitely improve in interestingness in this book, as well, but we also get Felurian, who is - I mean, you've got a magical ageless immortal female being, and of all the possible things she could be interested in, all she cares about is sex and looking pretty? Rothfuss could really have done better here. And Denna, the female lead, doesn't get a whole lot of page time.
I found the interlude in Ademre to be interesting but I was wishing it would have more impact on Kvothe's world outlook, rather than it just being a cool thing he did once. Also, how is it possible that the chick he helped the rich guy to marry isn't his aunt? Rothfuss emphasized how extremely familiar she looked to Kvothe the first time they met, and we know her older sister ran off with the Ruh. Granted, that would be kind of an extreme age difference between sisters, since the chick is roughly Kvothe's age or a bit younger, and the older sister would be at least 18 years older, but still, that sort of thing happens. It seemed so ridiculously obvious. Is Rothfuss going to drag us back to that city again in the next book? Sigh.
Also didn't love how wimpy Kvothe is in the present day narrative. The bit with the soldiers was annoying. Keeping in mind that the entire present-day narrative has occurred over the space of less than a week, he's been on the receiving end of a lot of ass-kicking. In the next book, we're going to need at least a bit of time lapse so he can get back in shape for the final battle that's inevitably on its way.
