My biggest gripe with this book is the fact that the majority of the characters all survived. The eruption of Vesuvius was totally devastating! But I guess you can't write a YA book and have all your characters die, and Lawrence did kill off a few people. As a mystery, this book was a little lacking, because anyone who knows anything about Roman history will immediately know what's going on when a book is set in ancient times in Pompeii; the mystery of the blacksmith was really a side note in the larger plotline of "OK, when's it going to happen?" Also, the fact that the characters were smart enough to figure out what was going on and STILL NOT LEAVE made me crazy. But overall still a fun read. (Finished on 7/21/15)
