I had completely forgotten that I'd read this book before, to the point that when I found a nice hardback at a used bookstore, I bought it and saved it for months, knowing that I would savor the last of GGK's early novels that I hadn't yet read. I made it all the way through the prologue and into the first chapter before I realized: I'd totally read a scene where armed men are going to steal something off a holy island in the dark. Had GGK truly written about such a thing twice? ...Well, no. He hadn't. So I was cheated of a "new" GGK book to read. But I reread the whole thing anyway, and the ending was still sweet.
