supercheesegirl: (soldier buddies)
it's wednesday. i made jorn do the car dance this morning--i thought jorn and dylan had done the car dance last night, because no one told me ben upstairs wanted to wait until morning. if i had known, i might've set my alarm ten minutes earlier so i could do it, but as it was, at 7:30am i needed to be leaving the house to get on the T for work (i've been leaving early lately because the T has had a lot of delays with all the snow piled up). so jorn had to do the car dance, and i just found out he got stuck behind a fed ex truck and didn't get back home til 7:50, so he didn't have time for a shower. boy, did i feel bad, especially when the T ran on time and i got to work at 8:10 instead of 8:30. jorn's been so good to me lately, what with the shoveling and the car dancing and all. i hope i can do something for him sometime soon.

in other news, i've been watching the new battlestar galactica miniseries on the scifi channel. it's interesting. first of all, the characters are incredibly oversexed. everyone is always getting it on, or thinking about getting it on, or looking soulfully at the person they'd like to get it on with. in the interest of the getting it on, the makers of the show have changed the characters around quite a bit.

the original show starred two cool guys, Apollo and Starbuck, superstar fighter pilots who defended the Galactica and had a darn good time. other main characters included:
Commander Adama, Apollo's dad and commander of the fleet;
Athena, Apollo's sister who worked on the bridge;
Zak, Apollo's brother who died in one of the first episodes;
Boomer, the token black guy fighter pilot;
Colonel Tigh, the other black guy, whose job i can't quite figure out, but he's always arguing with Adama about something;
Cassiopeia, the prostitute with a heart of gold who makes a new life for herself on Galactica (and eventually become Starbuck's girlfriend);
Baltar, the asshole who betrays humanity to the Ceylons;
Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman, before her Dr. Quinn days, as the chick who falls in love with Apollo, marries him, and then dies;
Boxy, her annoying kid, whom Apollo adopts;
and his annoying robot dog, or "daggett".

here's what the makers of this show have done to the basic cast. they've added a lot more female characters and given them cooler things to do than work on the bridge or in the infirmary, which is good. they made Starbuck a chick but kept the character basically the same--gambling, booze-swilling, best pilot in the fleet--but they seem to have cut out the womanizing from her character, which could have been interesting. now she and Apollo (who started off as a pretty big asshole instead of the good guy hero) look soulfully at each other. when she's not kicking ass, of course. they kept Apollo's brother Zak in theory, but killed him off two years before the start of the show instead of in the first episode, i guess to create a sense of tension between Apollo and his dad (and Apollo and Starbuck, since she was Zak's girlfriend, apparently). they cut out Athena, or, rather, replaced her character with another tougher chick. they made Boomer an asian girl, which is kind of cool, and they stuck Boxy with her instead of onto Apollo.

one thing about this one i didn't like so much--that when the Ceylons attacked and decimated the twelve colonies, Adama was all about getting into the war rather than helping the people. all the people who were on the planets who survived the initial blasts just got left behind, which sucked. in the original, there was a big concentrated effort to save whomever they could.

one thing that was done well was the use of technology. they made the instruments and screens look a lot like they did on the original show, but not cheesy or ridiculous. they also gave a reason for using technology that looked outdated, like phones with cords: that the Ceylons had the ability, during the first Ceylon war, to interfere with wireless systems and computer networks and shut them down. so it made sense. i liked that way of incorporating some of the look of the original show and having a reason for doing it.

they also made Baltar hot and sort of british and slimy, instead of old and slimy, which i vote for, but i'm already sick of Baltar because of this other thing they've done, which is that they've given the Ceylons the ability to create humanoid Ceylons who look just like normal people. one of these, of course, is a scantily-clad blonde who's always shagging Baltar silly. this will be his downfall, because otherwise he's really smart and could do good things for the fleet. they've set it up that we will hate Baltar because of his slimy dealings with women instead of his slimy dealings with the Ceylons. well, it's sort of the same thing, since she's a Ceylon, but the old Baltar wasn't doing it with anyone, so there's a whole added slime factor. also, Baltar isn't currently with the Ceylon super-ho, but for some reason he sees her all the time and she talks to him and distracts him. i am already seriously sick of this plotline.

otherwise, it's kind of cool. we get to see more of the techie people on the ship who, like, repair the jets and stuff, instead of always just seeing the cool fighter pilot guys. i'll keep watching it if they decide to make it a real series. but it is pretty different from the classic.

oh, one more thing. no robot dog. yet.

I'm really really fond of the way that the original series is simultaneously both the blueprint and the history for this series -- as you've described, the characters are mostly all there, but with sex changes and sex-obsessions, but on the other hand the way the cylons looked to us in 1978 is the way they apparently looked in the current series 40 years ago. But it's not the same cylons that chased Lorne Green across the galaxy.

And Boxy was there for all of three scenes in the pilot and never seen again. I can deal with this.

Yeah, the kid and the robot dog are definitely some of the weaker points of the original series, I know. :)
