This is hilarious and a lot of fun. A little violent, and the mean farmers are really mean, but overall a good early chapter book to read to my little one. As an adult, I can't help wondering what will happen after the ending, when the farmers eventually stop waiting and figure out that the fox has found another way - but my vague recollection of the movie is that (1) it resolves this issue, and (2) it's way too grownup for my kid at this point. But she doesn't need the movie yet, and she's satisfied at the end, so no worries from her.
