here's my new ish. comments are welcome.

my family has planned the family vacation for july 26 through august 2 or so--that friday through sunday. as many of you know, i currently live in NC while my parents live in PA. i was planning on taking the train up to PA on that thursday or friday, and since we're going on a road trip, we'll just end up in g-boro by the end of the trip the following week.

my best friend lauren's godparents gave her a free plane ticket to anywhere in the continental US for christmas. (it was from their frequent flyer miles.) so she's dying to go to las vegas, and she's been trying to convince us all to go with her.

my parents said they'd buy me a plane ticket for my birthday if i want it (provided laur and i don't choose to go to vegas during the already-planned family vacation). my other friend missi's dad is getting married in vegas on my birthday, july 27, so she'll be in town a few days before that (i think).

so what we were kind of thinking of is this. all tickets to vegas and hotel rooms are cheaper if you go sunday-thursday, so we were thinking i could take the train up to philly on the saturday before my birthday (the 20th), leave for vegas on sunday, stay there till thursday night (and probably get to see missi too while we're there), be at home on friday, and leave for vacation with my family on saturday (my birthday).

pros of this plan:
--i get to go to vegas! with my best friend!

cons:
--my parents give me money all the time! i feel guilty taking it, let alone taking a plane ticket to vegas from them.
--i'd be away for two weeks instead of one.
--i don't know if my part-time job will give me 20 hrs/wk for the month of july if that's only going to be three weeks, and then i'm gone for two weeks, and then i'm there for another week and then school starts.
--if my part-time job can't give me a lot of hours, i'll need to get a temp job, but i don't know if that'll be possible if i'm only available for three weeks.
--and i can't just not work this summer. and i refuse to ask my parents for rent money. mom's already insisted on paying my tuition for the fall (instead of me putting it on my credit card).

(i have the assistantship for the month of june, which is why i can't work a lot of hours at the part-time job earlier in the summer. the assistantship runs through the end of june).

so i guess the cons all come down to money and my lack of it.

what do you think? do i go to vegas?

temp agencies are there for people that need short-term jobs. They just gave christina a one (1)-day job on friday. Of course, she was looking for something a bit more substantial. But they just started looking for her.

Anyway, you should go. You might not get to go on a trip again for a long time. Living on your own without parental support does not lend itself to lavish cross-country excursions.

Your parents love you, and with you out of the house, this is one (1) of the few ways they still have to show it, aside from telling you over the phone. They want you to be happy and have fun with your friends. I think they'll feel awkward if you turn down their generosity because you don't want to take money from them anymore.

My parents can't do anything remotely close to this because they have three (3) kids. The money is spread too thin, even when they don't spend anything on me aside from xmas and birthday presents. But you're an only child! You're supposed to be spoiled rotten. That's the nature of the game. Stop feeling guilty and just remember to thank them profusely. :)

And tell the CSI guys I said hi if you see them.

I won't say "You should/shouldn't go" but as soon as I read this, the first thought in my haed was "When will be the next time you'll get a change to go to Las Vegas?"

Actually, my first thought was "Take me with you, dammit!" but a very, very quick second though was the one I just mentioned. But honestly, job loyalty is way overrated, temp positions are nothing to worry about - there's always someone out there who needs something [even if it is for a short while], and why the hell not? Everyone else I know is taking a vacation to Vegas, you ought to as well. =-)
