hi. i had a really great weekend. although i will preface this entry by stating that i was incredibly foolish to assume the weather in PA would be nice just because it's may. i left greensboro with a suitcase full of tank tops and t-shirts and flipflops. and my oh my is it chilly.
so we went to rose's graduation on saturday. i wore khakis, and because i didn't pack any more sensible shoes, sandals. a long-sleeved white shirt, and a green sweater borrowed from my mom. i completely froze my ass off. the rain friday night and saturday morning was so bad that the white tent that was set up for the graduation collapsed. they had the ceremony outside anyway. it was muddy and cold. laur and coll and i huddled together for warmth, and coll was miserable with a sinus infection, but we managed to cheer loudly for rose anyway. she got an award from some chemical society, it was a pretty big deal. we were pround. and afterward, rose was so excited she wanted us to take lots of pictures! (this is the girl that on a trip to spain with lauren would only allow her picture to be taken once.) so i have captured the smiling graduate rose on film.
afterward the ceremony and the picture-taking, mrs. alken invited us back to her house for dinner, but coll just felt too ill with the sinus infection, so we dropped her off at her house (and she didn't get to come with us to new york for missi's graduation either. poor thing.). and mrs. alken whipped us up a lovely lovely meal (in like fifteen minutes flat, because she wasn't expected company for dinner), and even gave laur and i a bag of fruit and some cookies and juice for the long drive to new york.
and a long drive it was, but laur and i stayed entertained by bitching to each other about stuff the entire way, for four hours. it was great fun. and when we got to missi's at around midnight, we found out that the people in her house had made a sleeping schedule for the weekend so that there were beds available for us to sleep on, instead of sleeping on the floor. it was so sweet of them. so marty, if you ever find my journal, thanks again for the bed. we stayed up till around 2am, i guess, watching missi and mike get trounced at beirut.
sunday morning, we got up around 9:30 because laur needed to go to church (crazy catholics) and i agreed to go with her. we showered and got to the 11am mass downtown, and then went to subway for a really good lunch. graduation started at 1:30, and we found missi's mom, who had saved seats for us. she rocks. and it was pretty chilly outside, but that didn't stop me from getting sunburnt when the sun did come out. argh.
the keynote speaker was Charlie Rose, who if you didn't know (and i didn't) is a famous interviewer and host of the Charlie Rose show and a correspondent or something for 60 Minutes II. and he was pretty cool. he started out by saying that he hadn't met any of the graduates yet, but he knew several of their names, and listed off a few, including missi, so we thought, wow, i wonder if he means *our* missi or if he's just picking random names. and he goes on to say that he's been reading the campus newspaper, The Maroon, and he really enjoyed the article that featured student responses when they found out who the commencement speaker was. and he quoted from the article: all the things different kids had said when they found out he was the commencement speaker. somebody said she'd rather have madonna, and someone else said that having Charlie Rose was like a weak follow-up to last year's speaker, who was Dan Rather. and then he says:
Missi Decker just said, "Who?"
he actually used her full name. and then went on to explain who he was and what kind of insights he had for the graduating class and that kind of thing. but we were so mortified for her. and we called her Who for the rest of the day, and i'm sure i'll continue to call her Who for a long time.
so after the ceremony laur and i took some pictures and then later on went out to dinner with missi and mike, her mom and mom's boyfriend george, and mom's parents. and it was a lovely, lovely dinner, and we drove back home after that and didn't get in till 2am. at which time i found out that my dad had forgotten i wasn't home yet and had locked up before he went to bed, so laur and i had to pound on the door till we woke up my mom and she came down and let us in. and then i went to bed.
