so my girlfriends lauren, colleen, rose, and missi came to visit me this weekend.
friday night dylan went to his friend heather's to play ddr, and jorn and dann went with him while i stayed home to clean some more and wait for the girls. laur's car (containing laur, coll, and rose) arrived around midnight. after parking in the driveway, laur was immediately accosted by a yelling black woman who begged her to give her (the yelling black woman's) car a jump. laur said, we have to go up and see our friend, to which the woman responded, okay i'll wait for you. needless to say, no one wanted to go back outside for a while, but when we did the woman was gone. the girls all liked my apartment (this was their first visit, so they hadn't seen it before), and they commented on how clean! it was. i said, oh we always keep it like this. and i was pleased. missi got in not too long after the other girls--she was driving from nyc and hadn't had as long a drive. in a little while we had to go outside to move cars around so that annie, my downstairs neighbor, and her columbian boyfriend could go somewhere in her car. and then we got to bed pretty early.
saturday morning, we awoke to the pleasant sound of my landlord ringing the doorbell at 9:15am. the landlords had planned to have a large load of mulch dropped off in the driveway on saturday morning, and so they needed the driveway empty for this to occur. Alem2 swore that the mulch delivery guy would be arriving momentarily, and then we could put the cars back in the driveway--half an hour, tops. so laur and missi and i moved their cars to the church parking lot next door to our building at around 9:30. this wouldn't ordinarily have been an option, but the gate was open, so we went for it. then, since we know that the church people don't want non-church people to park in their lot, we decided to sit in the cars to wait it out, in case the church people came out asking questions. so we hung out a while. pretty soon jorn came out to see if we would want mcdonald's mcgriddles for breakfast, and it was agreed to be a good idea. we piled in laur's car and drove up to mcd's, got food, brought it back. jorn took coll's order up into the house to her, and laur and missi and i ate in laur's car in the church parking lot. coll and rose came out to visit, then went back inside. a discussion was had with with church people, who reluctantly allowed us to remain in their parking lot, and they were thanked for their understanding and flexibility. the mulch still had not arrived. around 11:00 Alem2 wandered over to tell us that we might as well put the cars back in the driveway and go about our business (we were still in our pajamas), and she would ring for us if and when the mulch guy arrived. we did so, and got settled in to chat on the couch upstairs. not ten minutes later the mulch guy arrived, of course. we parked in the public lot for ten minutes, then drove around the block twice before the mulch got unloaded. we gratefully left our cars in the driveway next to a huge mound of mulch. it was now almost 11:30, and we started all this at 9:15. i said, welcome to boston.
we all got showered and ready to go out and decided that we'd take a walk around downtown. we wandered through the commons and the public gardens, and missi got pooed on by a bird. it was a beautiful day, though, and we got her cleaned up, and otherwise it was a very nice time. then rose wanted to see the public library, so since no one else had any big ideas we walked up boylston street to go there. on the way, we all climbed on the giant teddy bear that's outside what used to be F.A.O. Schwartz and got our picture taken. the library ended up being a very good idea, since i had never been there before (i hadn't even been to the commons since before i moved here), and jorn and i signed up for library cards: \m/ . the library is freakin' gorgeous. we saw a really cool photographic exhibit and some beautiful murals and sculptures and huge reading room, and we took our pictures by the fountain in the courtyard, but then we started wondering where all the books were and wandered around trying to find the books. turns out there was a whole other wing besides the one we were in, and that's where the books were! we had a good chat there, and used the bathrooms, and jorn found a few books he wanted to check out, and overall it was a great experience.
then we figured we'd walk up newbury street, do some shopping maybe, and grab the T at hynes ica to get back to cambridge. this was also fun. rose bought a $10 massage for lauren from the chinese massage people on the street, and lauren was very relaxed afterwards. we got ice cream from somewhere and it was good. missi stepped in gum and got it all over the bottom of her shoe, and we all sympathized with her awful luck (especially after the bird incident). rose and i went in the fairy store, and i totally have to go back there because they have the cutest tank tops ever and i want one. wish i had looked at the price.
so now it was around 5:00, and we took the T up to harvard. the girls and i decided to walk around harvard, see the campus and my office, and then meet up with jorn again for dinner at the Border Cafe. at this point rose got a little out of hand. she wanted to see the inside of a harvard dorm and so snuck us inside one (and was highly disappointed to find it exactly like any other dorm, even down to the freshman girl wrapped in a towel getting out of the shower). we also found rick greenberg's intro econ homework on the ground, and some of us insisted on keeping it (in case rick ends up being president someday?). :) then we found two weddings, and we looked at the brides and critiqued the bridesmaid dresses and oohed and aahed. then i stepped in a large mud puddle and got my sandal soaked. eww. hilarity ensued as we considered the situation: missi with gum on her shoe and bird poo in her hair and me tromping in a mud puddle, as these beautiful brides pose for pictures in their elegant princess-like gowns. haha. we saw memorial hall (and used the bathrooms there) and took a picture by the science center fountain, and i'm really hoping it turns out right because i set it up so that the rainbow from the fountain was right between lauren and missi. then rose, still a bit out of hand, wandered the science center looking for the chemistry department, so she could experience a taste of harvard chemistry. we did eventually find some labs for her to peer into. the girls oohed and aahed at my office too, that was fun.
then we met up with jorn at the border cafe! i love this restaurant. our waiter was mel, and much fuss was made over his handsomeness and charm. he really lucked out with our table, let me tell ya. we all had margaritas except colleen who had two coronas, and it was really fun. we T'ed back to my place and planned to watch a movie or something, but we forgot all about the hockey game (i thought about the game) that dann was watching, so instead we sat in my room and talked about stuff for hours. it was a much-needed talk, and of course some feelings got hurt and some of us got upset but that's to be expected when the five of us get together for a much-needed talk, and anyway it wasn't as bad as it could've been considering how strongly some of us feel about certain things. all in all it was a really good bonding chat.
more to come...
