supercheesegirl: (hero and the crown)
I'm having lo mein for lunch, left over from dinner last night, when my meal arrived late and I had already stuffed myself on everyone else's food (not to mention popcorn and brownies earlier) and hardly ate any of my own dinner. So that means I've got two lunches' worth of lo mein. Yum. Also, I have to remember how much I liked Kat's ginger chicken. And those green beans! Hellayum.

I had a good weekend. Friday I hid in my room and read pages and pages of stuff about the Incas. Saturday, worked at Otis, read more Inca stuff, gave three tours in a row and consequently felt hoarse. Came home, read more Incas, went to Amy's party. Very much enjoyed the spiked cider, even if it wasn't Dickens. (We really should explain that joke to poor Tom (who actually went out to the kitchen to check if it was Dickens for us, which made us cackle insanely).) The party was very fun. I'm so glad T & A are all settled in now. Sunday, finished yet another article about the Incas, then went to Darxus's for fantasy movie watching. We missed Annie and Bey, but they had more important stuff to take care of just then. We watched three movies: Willow, Legend, and The Last Unicorn.

Willow: I watched this with Jorn in Greensboro, so I saw it not that long ago, but it was still fun to watch. And later, I imdb'ed it and discovered that Joanne Whalley, who played Sorcha, played Fan in my all-time favorite version of A Christmas Carol, (1984, with George C. Scott as Scrooge). I knew I recognized her from somewhere!

Legend: It had been years and years since I saw this movie. I didn't even remember what it was about besides Tom Cruise and a princess and some evil. I really enjoyed it (which is a good thing, since I purchased it for this occasion). We watched the director's cut with the original orchestral soundtrack, and I think I might sometime soon watch the theatrical release with the Tangerine Dream soundtrack just to see what it's like. And dude, this movie was totally covered in glitter. This movie poured glitter over its head and then jumped around in it with its leather pants down, and any movie that evokes that image in my head must be a good movie. It was visually very pretty. I like things that are pretty. (And, dude, does anyone else think that Angel season 4's Beast is totally gakked from Tim Curry in this movie? Whoa.)

The Last Unicorn: I also bought this movie for this occasion, which I'd been meaning to do for a while. I have a taped-off-the-TV-with-the-original-1980s-commercials version, but I wanted something to keep for posterity. I was a little concerned because all the amazon reviews of the dvd edition said that the audio track was really terrible, but I didn't have any problems with it. I'll be happier when they finally release The Flight of Dragons on dvd, but hey. Oh, and did you hear that they're making a live-action version of The Last Unicorn? Here's what imdb says about it. Seems odd they've cast Jonathan Rhys-Meyers as Schmendrick instead of as Prince Lir, since I most certainly paired Schmendrick with Molly Grue, and Mia Farrow is a bit old for him. But they've got Christopher Lee, Angela Lansbury, and Rene Auberjonois back for this new version, so it can't go too badly.

My favorite line of the night:
Q: Where does King Haggard keep the Red Bull?
A: In the fridge!

In other news, the Kipster is keeping me hopping. And I'm a little concerned about this paper for class, since I read all those articles so fast they're all sort of blending together. I'll get it outlined tonight, at least, and hopefully chunks of it written. It's just a little five-pager but it *is* the first paper I've had to write in two years. I'll be glad when it's done.

Three excellent movies! Ok, I haven't seen The Last Unicorn but I loved the book.

I haven't seen Willow for years. I remember seeing it in the theater while visiting my aunt Sandie in California when I was... um... 11. Man that was a long time ago! I have seen it since then, of course, but still not for many years. I should see about purchasing it.

I LOVE Legend. In fact I love it so much that I bought a second copy on dvd after the dog peed on the cover of my first copy. The dvd was fine, of course, but I had to have the dvd plus the case in proper order. Tim Curry rocks my socks. And you're so right about the glitter. Yay glitter! *pours glitter*

I really need to see The Last Unicorn. I don't know how I've missed seeing this movie all these years. Maybe I'll blame it on living in Germany for 3 years in the 80's. I missed out on more than a few items of American pop culture but living in Germany was worth it.

The Last Unicorn is so awesome. I can't believe you haven't seen it! I never read the book til about a year ago, but the movie is unbelievably close to the book. Beagle wrote the screenplay, so I guess that would explain it. :)

I only just read the book myself! Which is again surprising considering I've been an avid reader since I was 8 and fantasy is one of my favorite genres. I ended up getting the book from a co-worker who was moving back to Canada and wanted to get rid of heavy items such as books. He gave me around 10 books and The Last Unicorn was one of them. Yay for co-workers with good taste!

Ahem. It's not Germany's fault! I grew up with this movie! I have seen it countless, countless times.

You really need to see it. It's wonderful. Beautiful. Einfach fantastisch!

Well here's how it worked. I missed stuff when it was out in the US because I was in Germany but by the time stuff came to Germany I was back in the US. Of course it's not Germany's fault. I <3 Germany. It was just the timing. I do remember seeing The Dark Crystal at a British theater in Germany. I didn't miss out on everything!

*grins* Okay then. That was unfortunate, though! I hope you get the chance to see it some time soon. I read the book as well, but it was ages ago.

*Heh* I guess it's the minority...but I was a senior and I remember a freshman girl that said "The only thing good about legend is that it has Tom Cruise"

HEE HEE HEE!!!!! That is great. I enjoy this movie, too - crazy stuff, but nifty. I didn't know there were two different soundtrack versions, though. I'm not entirely sure which one I've seen.

The whole live-action Last Unicorn thing is just ... weird. I'm not sure how I feel about it.

well, it was more like the producers spent half the budget on glitter and fluffy stuff to blow around in the air. You could barely see the actors for like 1/4 of the movie because of all the crap in the air. A bit ridiculous, imo.

Well, yeah, it was ridiculous. But I still enjoyed it. Sometimes ridiculous things can be nifty.

I liked the ridiculous factor.

I'm worried about the live-action thing, too... I hope they don't make the unicorn with whatever they used on scooby doo and garfield, because that's just horrifying.
