Last night was a surprisingly good night even though I had to run around a lot. After work, I went downtown to Emerson--my former professor, Stuart, was giving a poetry reading. I was really excited to see him. He read some new poems and also some from his most recent book, which I should really go back to and read again. The reading went well. Then he invited me to join him and some other folks for a beer after the reading. It was nice to hang out with Stuart at a bar again, and nice to hang out with other writerly types. (I think that's the eventual future someday goal--writing again, teaching at a college somewhere--but we won't think too hard about that right now.) Anyway, it was good to see Stuart. I left around 9:30ish and was halfway to Central Square before I realized that I had walked out on my share of the bill. I left early, see, before the bill came and everybody pulled out their wallets, so I completely forgot. I've already apologized to Stuart in an email and promised him much beer the next time I see him, but I feel like a major dickhead for flaking out like that in front of his friends. Grr.
So then I met up with Jorn, Dann, and Dyl at the Middle East for a show. We were seeing The Advantage, but they didn't go on til almost midnight. I was in time to catch two of the opening bands, Confusatron and Menomena. Confusatron was goofy, but really good. They wove some sounds from Mario 3 into their music, and played some really cool songs. I liked Menomena too, but their first song was the one I liked the best. The Advantage was really good, I thought. They played themes from Megaman 2, Contra, Gremlins, Wizards and Warriors, and Air Fortress (none of which I recognized), Castlevania 3 (which was at least familiar), and Castlevania, Marble Madness, and LoZ (which made me really happy). They were selling buttons two for $1 that had various nintendo characters on them, and Jorn bought a bunch for everybody. I got Link and was pleased. Dyl got Ninja Gaiden, Dann got PunchOut and Megaman, and Jorn got Megaman and something else. The only problem was the bunch of really drunk guys being obnoxious and screaming shit at the band. One of them actually leaped up on stage between songs and started yelling about how these guys rock. The band was totally cool and just ignored them, but you could tell they weren't happy about the crowd. That sucked, because most of the people in the crowd were cool and were totally into the show. Drunk assholes making trouble. Meh! But overall, a really great show. (edit: I posted about this show at NUG here.)
