My mom's been talking about adopting a greyhound, and she finally went through with it. She started the application process a few months ago, and they approved her to get a dog a while back but they were waiting for one that would be cat safe. I warned her about what Melissa R's dog did to that cat in Greensboro (you probably don't want to know) and that made her sufficiently nervous about the health of the kitties to wait and make sure the dog would be okay. She's been like a little kid, all excited about getting this thing. (Jorn, of course, attributes the dog-getting to her having an ongoing plot to keep him from ever coming to her house again. I told him she wants the dog for itself, but scaring Jorn off would just be an added bonus.)
Anyway, they got word last week that the organization - http://www.firstgreys.org - had a likely candidate. And it seems that today, Cliff the greyhound is heading home to Hatfield, PA with my mother. She's going to be pretty much wetting herself all day today. The greyhound people said that the dog loves people and is very affectionate and friendly and gentle, so hopefully all that is true and Jorn won't have to be too scared of him. It's just so funny to think about my mom with a large dog--this one's supposed to be even larger than a regular greyhound. The only other dog we ever had (and that my mom has ever had) was Reggie, the purebred Lhasa Apso that we got when I was nine, and we only got him because Mom's friend's dog had puppies and she couldn't unload them on anyone, so she practically paid us to take the runt off her hands. A Lhasa (ie, mop with feet) is a far cry from a greyhound. Personally I'm really excited, though, because I kind of like dogs. I wouldn't really want one around all the time but it might be nice to have one for sometimes.
Anyway, here's a picture of the dog from the FirstGreys website:
