Book 2 of the Song of the Lioness quartet - [livejournal.com profile] lydian lent me the rest of the series. Too bad I only brought book 2 with me to work. Or maybe that's a good thing.

The Song of the Lioness is one of the series I liked as a kid that's held up fairly well with time. It's a little fluffy now, but it's still quite good. It hits a bunch of nifty girl-buttons (the horse, the sword, the sexy boyfriends), while still acknowledging that it can be a raging pain to be biologically female.

You may be very glad that you only brought book 2 to work. There are also dangerous other series set in that universe - Protector of the Small is another girl knight series, although it's wildly different than the Alanna stuff. It rocks.

(Pierce's upcoming book contains a street named after me. I'm all smug.)

I don't know how the heck I never discovered these as a kid. I mean, my all-time favorite book ever has our heroine secretly learning to fight, battling dragons, and saving the kingdom, so this would've been right up my alley. And I'm loving the sexy boyfriends. I mean, I know she's got to end up with Jonathan forever, because he's the Prince and that's the way stories like this go, but I'm so rooting for George. (He reminds me a bit of Hyacinthe, a character from Jacqueline Carey's Kushiel trilogy, and I *loved* Hyacinthe.)

No matter what my yearly book goal is, I think it's probably best if I limit myself to one book a day. That way I'll be able to get other things done too.

Named after *you*, in particular, not just some generalized Elizabeth? As in you know the author personally? DUDE.

What was your favorite book as a kid? It sounds like something I should have read, but I can't place it.

It's actually a street with my maiden last name on it. And yes, me personally. (And my sister. But she is far away and has no LJ account.)

Tammy is way the hell cool. I help administrate her fan site's chat boards. If you want to come to a conference for gifted kids this weekend, I could introduce you, however, you should be warned that there will be a ton of kids who love the books, and talk about them, and you'd need heavy duty headphones to avoid having the plot spoiled.

from that little bit, it sounds like the enchanted forest books, by Patricia Wrede.

Dealing With Dragons, et al? Those were great too (I think there's still a few of those I haven't read, actually)--Cimorene was awesome--but they were not my all-time favorite.

there were four of them, I think.

I think I read the first two... ? Not sure. Should look into that.

The Hero and the Crown, by Robin McKinley? I love that book *so much*.

Aw, gifted kids talking about books are so cute. I wish I could've gone to conferences as a kid. Sadly, I'm booked up all weekend, but it sounds like a fun time!

huh. I should have guessed.

You've read the Blue Sword, right?

of course you have.

Of course. But I read The Hero and the Crown first, so I always loved it more. I think I've got almost everything McKinley's ever published.

I read Hero first too, but I loved blue sword more (infinity, infinity plus one. small enough difference)

McKinley rocks.

You've read The Pushcart War haven't you? It's seriously my favorite book, and i read it in sixth grade. It's also a fabulous book to read aloud.

I never even heard of it! Want to lend it to me? :)

Absolutely! It's my sixth grade copy, though, so it's very very tattered and loved. I'll bring it by when i pick you and heather up at the booth at 6:15 on Saturday.

See, like how i worked that in?? ;-)
