Earlier this week, Jorn said, "I can't wait to not find out what's in the hatch again!!" And no, of course we didn't find out what's in the damn hatch. And "the boy" The Others were coming for was Walt, not Claire's baby, and he's going to be kidnapped all summer now and Sawyer got shot and he and Michael and Jin are floating fifteen miles from land, and we still don't know what's in the damn hatch. Oh and Charlie's going to be a drug addict again. Damn it.
Other people are most likely way ahead of me on the theories, but here's what I think is going on. I think the island is evil. I mean, yes, duh, but I'm starting to think about the implications of that. Locke, "a man of faith", believes in the island, worships it even. He believes they were brought there for a purpose, every single one of them. But it hasn't occurred to him that the island isn't benevolent. It cured him, after all. Maybe he thinks of it as too big a power to be either good or evil. But it's pretty clear to me that the island is a bad, bad place. It's not a natural place--the monster/defense system in the woods is mechanical, we know this now from the sounds it made when it tried to take Locke. And the hatch goes way far down into the island, from what we could see, too far to be natural. The island, if not man-made, is at the least not a naturally-occurring place. Locke is going farther and farther into his worship of the island, and I think Jack was right to call it that they're going to have a Locke problem. The man is going to become the high priest of the island, I'm thinking, and it makes me sad because he's a good man. But he's a man who had nothing before he came to the island, and now on the island he has everything, and he's going to become a tool of the evil before he realizes it's happening.
Other things. Shannon still annoys me. Sun might actually be my favorite character. For everything else Charlie is he is at least damn fucking tough, tougher than he even knows he is, and he loves Claire so much, and I love that about them. I don't know if I want her to find out about the drugs or not. It could be she'll find out and help him to quit forever, and it could be she'll find out and hate him. She's been more unpredictable since she got back from being kidnapped. Somehow I didn't feel bad about Arzt (and the line "You've got some Arzt on you" cracked me up). I mean, he was the expendable crew member on the away team, you know?
When they blew open the hatch, we saw Jack and Locke opening the hatch, then we had a view from inside the hatch looking up at Jack and Locke looking into it. At this point Jorn exclaimed "Oh! WE'RE in the hatch!!!" I laughed a lot.
Mysteries that still need solving:
- What the hell do the numbers mean? Can Hurley stop their evil power?
- Will Michael, Jin, and Sawyer make it back to shore safely?
- Who took Walt? Will Michael be able to save him?
- Where's Jack's dad? He wasn't in his coffin, remember?
- Will Locke get his freak on with Danielle? Yes, yes he will.
- I know I'm missing some things here.
- [edit] Where are the people from the tail section? [/edit]
- Who built the island? How can we safely avoid/shut down the security system?
- and finally, WHAT'S IN THE GODDAMNED HATCH???
Overall, though, I think it was a good season finale. I mean, they had to leave us with a cliffhanger. It wouldn'tve been the show we all know and love if there had been a nice little room inside the hatch full of soft beds and twinkies and stuff.
I still need a Lost icon. Grr.

And dude. I still think they should have given us something. An answer to at least one of the big questions. Just one good solid answer - it would've still left plenty of mysteries, but it would've left me feeling a little less like I'm never, ever going to know anything.

Date: 2005-05-27 01:29 am (UTC)From:Anyone but me see real bad news in store for those guys rather than any real trouble for Walt? Heh. They will have awakened a sleeping giant once that kid's mojo goes into overdrive (which it will now that he has reason to be truly upset). If any of them are left alive they will be begging the islanders to take him back. Heh.

Date: 2005-05-29 01:55 pm (UTC)From:Maybe they need to sort out who are really the leaders and where they stand far more than they need to look towards heroes. A hero can save the day one moment and sink the ship the next. A leader is steadfast, diligent, there in the good and the bad times and most of all, willing to sacrifice.
Who has sacrificed? Who is steadfast? Who is clear where they stand?
There is an old Arab proverb: "Who must do the hard things? He who can."
Look at those things are we will find our leader. That leader will draw heroes to her/him.

Date: 2005-05-26 02:41 pm (UTC)From:Many of the numbers last night I didn't even notice. Like (as someone pointed out) the girl's athletic team... the numbers on their shirts were apparently all laid out, *in order*. (4 8 15 16 23 42) and bunches more. And 15 miles from shore.
Locke's faith is, without a doubt, misplaced... but who will follow him? Oh, and where are the people from the tail section? Because you just know that woman Jack was talking to is going to show up again.

Date: 2005-05-26 02:55 pm (UTC)From:I keep forgetting about the tail section. Jorn and I talked about it after last week's episode when Jack talked to Anna Lucia (I'm proud, I remembered her name), and Jorn brought up that the tail section seemed to just fall off, from the shots we had of the crash. That's where the black woman's husband was, too, right? I would say that it seems unlikely they survived, because we haven't run into them on the island yet, but heck, that island keeps getting bigger and bigger. I wouldn't be overly surprised to find out it's actually attached to New Zealand somewhere. And there's lots of island they haven't explored yet (I mean, they knew about "the black rock" since Sayid met Danielle, but no one had gone looking for it).

Date: 2005-05-26 03:13 pm (UTC)From:Yes, Rose's husband was also in the tail section. The island is obviously huge, and as Danielle said, "Are you on the same island I'm on?" Obviously The Others have a stash of technology (a working boat with gasoline, a bomb thrown by a girl who may very well be Danielle's daughter Alex), and the "middle section" people never found the Others' camp, so the tail section could be anywhere.

Date: 2005-05-26 03:25 pm (UTC)From:Now, this is all not from me noticing, but from me hearing this on the radio this morning and reading message boards obsessively last night, so I might not have the numbers right.
Hurley's hotel room # was 2342, the flight was at gate #23, when his car broke down the speedometer flashed The Numbers in backwards sequence.... and I think there was something about rows on the plane from an earlier episode. Jack was in row 23 and that chick he was talking to was in row 42?
I'm waiting for discussion on the numbers next season and for one of them to reveal themelves as a true geek and make a Hitchhiker's reference... but that's just me.
Oh, and Preston and Steve's theory about what's in the hatch: A Starbucks. :)

OOH CHARLIE DON'T START DOING THE DRUGS AGAIN!! BAD BAD BAD!!! I THOUGHT YOU WERE STRONGER THAN THAT!!!!
I am pretty sure it was Alex who threw the bomb. I remember my mother didn't see it so I had to rewind and show her again.
Obviously what is in the hatch is an EVIL LADDER OF DOOM!!! Either than or it just goes to all of those other holes that the "security system" comes out of.
You would think that Locke would have seen enough of what was attacking him to tell everyone else what it was instead of just saying "I would have been okay, the Island is testing me."
There was a theory for a long time that the Island is Pergatory... but apparently that was dismissed by the writers.
I personally think that they are just making everything up as they go along.

Date: 2005-05-27 04:00 am (UTC)From:And I wish Sawyer had died in like episode 2. I can't stand that guy. I also can't stand that women find men like that attractive. A woman might as well announce to the world that she enjoys getting the crap beat out of her, because that's all a guy like that ends up doing.
Sawyer and Kate shouldn't make babies of any kind, because his STD could get passed to the babies! BAD! And poor Kate deserves a better man than that.
