On Tuesday evening, I met up with Leah from the Otis House to learn the short walking tour of Beacon Hill. I have a map and a list of descriptions and dates, and I know the route now; however, I would feel uncomfortable giving this tour to people who have paid for it until I have practiced it. So would any of you like to go on a free walking tour of Beacon Hill next week? I'm thinking one day after work when it's nice out, maybe Wednesday? Around 6pmish? It would last probably a little over an hour, since I'll still be figuring things out. It's a lovely place to walk around and explore, and this would give me the incentive to actually go through the notes and start memorizing and making cue cards. Let me know and, depending on who wants to go, we'll set up an official day, time, and place to meet (preferably near the Otis House, which is a quick walk from Charles/MGH and Gov't Center).

(Also, this is the version of the tour that's light on the serious architectural history. We stop and point at several buildings because JFK went there once, and there's less emphasis on heavy historical details. It's a lighthearted fun kind of tour.)

We could possibly bump it back a little, too. I mostly just wanted to suggest a ballpark day/time and see who'd be interested.

I maybe up for it on wednesday if t has rehearsal. But what i'm definately up for is the flea market a week from sunday. it's on our radar, and we're planning on going. having a good, full, fun day. you and jorn up for it?

Ooh. That would make for a full weekend--next Saturday is the Pride parade, and I want to go this year (and may end up volunteering at the NARAL table), and that Saturday night is someone's housewarming party. How early would I have to drag my carcass out of bed? :)

ooo, early. We try to get there around 9:30/10, and it's an hour or so to get there, dunkin stop included. We would leave at 8:30ish...

We're planning on going either way, but would love to have you and jorn along. It's a fun time. :-)

I would *love* to go, and I'd rather go with you now than put it off till later this summer and not end up going. And the getting up early wouldn't be too too bad, since I would not bother with my hair and just wear a hat instead. Hair is the thing that takes the longest in the morning. And breakfast can be eaten in the car. Hmm. Jorn will likely see this post tonight, so hopefully he will comment with his thoughts.

I'd be down for the flea market. Is that the same one you took me to way back when, where I got that "more doctors smoke camels" ad?

Jorn and I talked about it last night, and we both want to go! I'm excited!

I would love to do that! I give art & architecture tours of Boston through Boston By Foot, and this year I'm giving the Beacon Hill tour. I'd love to see how another organization interprets the area, and I know we don't talk much about JFK.

Date: 2005-06-02 07:33 pm (UTC)From: [identity profile] supercheesegirl.livejournal.com
Well, we don't either. It's mostly Federalist stuff, you can't avoid that on Beacon Hill. But we talk about the church where JFK voted (for himself, probably) for president, and we point out the building where he lived at that time near the statehouse. Some other neat stuff. It's more than just the "Bulfinch = Teh Greatest" tour, which is nice. (It'll be fun to have you along, you can correct me when I'm wrong!)

Hehe. I'm not holding my breath on that account. I used to give the Waterfront tour, but it was discontinued because nobody cares about maritime trade anymore. *sniff* This is my first year giving the Beacon Hill tour regularly, and my first tour is June 13 - I'm going to have to go on a LOT o fpractice tours first to make sure I can give it without resorting to blatant lies!

Date: 2005-06-02 08:11 pm (UTC)From: [identity profile] supercheesegirl.livejournal.com
Yeah, I worry about the blatant lies, too. Though somehow I don't feel as bad blatantly lying about something as I do when I think something is true and tell people and then find out later it's totally wrong. But I get paid to do this stuff, so I guess I feel obligated to do it decently.

(Who *does* care about maritime trade?)

Don't MAKE me get out of this chair and come over there to defend maritime trade's honor!! I totally get the getting paid thing - since I'm just a BBF volunteer, I don't feel nearly as bad when I make a mistake as I would if I gave tours as part of a job.

Oh, sure, people sailed around and sold stuff, big deal.

Don't people pay for the Boston By Foot tours? If people are paying for the tours then how do they get away with using volunteer guides?
