Yay.
I thought this whole trilogy was interesting because it goes somewhere completely unexpected. The first book starts out with our hapless non-hero figuring out how to liberate the conquered land of Gil. By the end of the trilogy, he's not exactly the hero anymore, he's a strange mystical figure that has to be protected by his family (especially his son, the hero of the next generation), and the story isn't about *him* anymore really, it's about the history of magic in his family and how he can thwart the destiny this past demands of him. I was a little surprised that the story got so... big. But I was really happy about the end. I love a good ending.
