These do not have to be GOOD show memories. Just potent memories.
5)Cex with the Postal Service, in Carrboro, NC, maybe spring 2003? Cex was really funny (though Jorn swore he was funnier when he saw him before) but the Postal Service was what really rocked my world. I absolutely loved them. Every single song. And this was before everyone and their mom fell in love with the Postal Service, so I was totally cutting edge indie rock. It was just a hellagreat show.
4) MC Paul Barman with (some punky band) and Gogol Bordello at the Cats Cradle in Chapel Hill (or is it technically Carrboro?), NC, maybe fall 2002 or so (I have no idea, and a half an hour's worth of searching through mine and Jorn's old entries from when we lived in Greensboro isn't revealing it to me). It was just such an eclectic show. The punky band opened, and they were really cute, we liked them. But we were there to see MC Paul, and he did not disappoint. He was touring to promote his new cd, the one with Cock Mobster on it, and he was hilarious. After he did Cock Mobster he just kept going with these hysterical rhymes about various female celebrities, as if he'd thought of all these great lines after he recorded the song and he wanted to get some use out of them. And when some guy's cell phone rang he took it and rapped into it, and this was funny because it was back before it was cool to do that. And he painted a picture of some girl mid-song. Gogol Bordello was the headlining band and they were totally insane. They're older dudes, and apparently very theatrical--the show started with three girls wearing tails and waving around newspapers frolicking around the stage and in the audience, and then screaming into the microphone together. I remember the accordion player particularly because he just cracked me up. I was too tired to stay for their whole set, but they were totally awesome and I would love to go see them again.
3) Sarah McLachlan and The Chieftains at (an outdoor venue--not the big one in Camden, though) in Philadelphia. I was in high school, and I was so psyched to go see Sarah finally. This was either the Fumbling tour or the one right after, that's how long ago. I didn't know anything about the Chieftains, but I remember their set better than Sarah's. They are such masters of their craft, and they kept bringing out special guests, like this really young guy with a fiddle who was more than incredible. And at the end the Chieftains and Sarah and the fiddle guy and every other guest they had all came out on stage and rocked the hell out, all together, and it was so incredibly great. I didn't even care that I was there with my parents.
2) Boston Folk Festival at BU, September 2003. Right after I moved to Boston. Sarah B and Steve came up from CT and we went together, and it was seriously the best day EVAR. We had ice cream and falafel and fries and hungarian sausage, and smoothies and a gyro and lemonade and pad thai and coffee. Oh, and there were some bands, too. I remember really liking the Irish band, Danu, and Catie Curtis, and I remember Emmylou Harris being really good. Overall it was just a wonderful day in the sunshine with my best friend in the world.
1) Ben Folds Five at (the TLA? I can't remember the name of the club) in Philadelphia, October 1999. I went with John Collins and John Shelly, who used to be one of my best friends, and we had the best time ever. Fleming and John opened, and we really liked them. Train was the next opening band, and they played their big hits, Drops of Jupiter or whatever, and we made fun of them The Entire Time. The actual band wasn't bad, had some talent, but the singer was the biggest poser in the history of the universe--he was wearing velvet pants and a white poet shirt with flowy sleeves, and he kept picking up various instruments and playing solos and then putting them down again. He might not have sucked if he could've just picked one instrument and learned to play it well. We met these girls near us who had come specifically to see Train and were planning to leave after their set, but we convinced them to stay for Ben and the guys. And damn, were they great. This was my first BFF show. It was also the first time I'd heard any of the songs from "Unauthorized Biography...", and I remember falling totally and completely in love with every song. Especially Magic. Seeing Darren pound away on those drums! Just thinking about this show makes me so happy.
Some honorable mentions:
- Ben Folds Five at Colgate University in upstate New York, spring 2000 - my friend Missi went to school there, so she invited me up for the show. We were really close to the stage so I could see them all really well, and I almost caught Ben's sweaty t-shirt when he threw it into the audience.
- Rainer Maria at the Cats Cradle in Chapel Hill, NC, fall of 2001 0r 2002 - I totally thought they were awesome. They were opening for a band Jorn really likes and I fell asleep during their set, but I was on for Rainer Maria. I wrote a review of the show afterwards and sent it in to their website, and the webmaster sent me a free cd as a prize! And then I was entered in some contest with other people who'd written reviews, and I won it and he sent me a framed poster. Rainer Maria was therefore my favorite band for a while.
- Phish in Philly at the Spectrum, I think, fall/winter 1999. We had no pot but our seats were so high up we got high anyway from all the fumes around us. I was with Sarah B and Mel and I bought a t-shirt and it was an excellent show.
- El Vez! how could I forget the El Vez show? fall 2004 at the Middle East downstairs in Cambridge. My god he was great.
- the Y100 summer shindig in Philly, maybe spring/summer 1997. The Violent Femmes headlined. So good.
