i think that having a happy healthy head is a lot like having a happy healthy body. like, when i go to the gym regularly, i feel all strong, and i want to eat lots of fruit and salad, and things like cheese fries seem absolutely repulsive. but when i'm not working out regularly i am more likely to eat bad-for-me food, or conversely, when i'm eating lots of greasy pizza all the time it makes me feel less and less like working out. getting in the habit is the crucial thing. and this is what i think goes on in my head as well. when i'm doing a lot of writing, and i'm getting my work done for my classes, it makes me feel happy and accomplished and like i should continue to stay on top of things and writing a lot. but when i'm not writing, i start feeling like i *can't* write, and i get bummed, and that makes me not want to work on anything, which only makes it worse. like last week.
but this weekend was good. friday night jorn and i went shopping (and got a present for suzie & steev!) and then played a death-by-slow-poison game of scrabble. we started at 8:30pm or so and played until 11:30. the last few rounds were the worst, when i had both Vs and two Os and jorn had the Q and the Z. we were so sick of playing by that point, but neither of us was willing to just give up. i was trying to set it up so jorn could put "quiz", but i couldn't get it to work, so i just finished the game and put out all my tiles. our scores were i think 242 for me and 275 for jorn (after taking off points for the leftover Q), so he only beat me by like 30 points. earlier in the game he had been beating me by over 100 points, so i felt i had made a comeback.
and i got a lot of work done this weekend. i read 3/4 of the articles for my wednesday feminist theory class, and i worked (just a little bit) on prepping for the class i'm teaching next week (i still need to come up with a good poem exercise that they can do in groups, but i think i'm on top of that). and i read some poetry yesterday (On The Bus with Rosa Parks, by Rita Dove) and i wrote for a while, and then i revised up a poem for workshop this week. the revision went surprisingly well--the poem in question was at first a block of language on the page, and now it's (very unexpectedly) in couplets, with about seven beats per line, and slant rhyme at the end of each line. i *NEVER* rhyme. this is out-of-the-ordinary for me in a big way. but that's a very good thing. and of course, workshop will tear the poem up and i'll have to start all over, but that's a good thing too.
other things that happened this weekend: we had dinner with xina & j.t. on saturday night. it was chicken. it was good. jorn made a strawberry cake for dessert, and it was good too. it's actually still good, there's some left over on my counter. and after jorn went to the radio station, i watched a movie with xina & j.t. called Foxfire, which was based on a book by Joyce Carol Oates (and i really want to read it now). xina & j.t. weren't so thrilled with it, but i really liked it. and newsflash--this movie includes angelina jolie's breasts. seriously, they are right there on the screen. you might not like it much otherwise, since it's all about girl bonding and stuff, and the ending really does happen a little too fast, but there's still those breasts. worth seeing, they are.
