I was utterly impressed by Rainer Maria last Monday night. My boyfriend had dragged me along to the concert because he wanted to see Built to Spill; I had never heard of any of the bands before and wasn't really expecting to have a great time. That changed when Rainer Maria came onstage.
We were sitting on the speakers to the right of the stage, so I had a terrific view of the band, particularly Kyle's face as he thrashed around the stage, and Caithlin's barely-suppressed excitement. All of them were completely wrapped up in the music they were making, and it was great to see a band with a real attachment to their songs. They sounded wonderful, too, and now I'm dying to get one of their cds. Two other bands, the Delusions and Built to Spill, played after Rainer Maria, but I didn't like them nearly as much.
The members of Rainer Maria were selling T-shirts and cds while the other bands played, so I had the chance to go talk to them, but I didn't - being a poor grad student, I didn't have enough cash to buy a cd or T-shirt, even though I really wanted one, so I felt ashamed and didn't want to talk to them without buying something. But hopefully I'll get another chance, because I'm definitely going to get tickets when Kyle and Caithlin come back to NC in November. Thanks for a great show!
