I'm really glad I decided to go to the Rainer Maria show last night after all. (And it's RHINE-er, not RANE-er: like the poet or the horned mammal.) Heather had told me about the show and asked me to go with her, but I didn't know if I'd have time for it. But Farbs ended up not needing our help unloading their moving van, so after I got changed after work I went over to Columbia House and helped Dann and Heather move their furniture around. Then I hung out with Dann, Heather, and Courtney and ate fro yo until it was time for the show. Heather was superexcited because it was her first Middle East show as a Central Square resident (ie, she could just walk home afterwards). We met up with her friends Brendan (who works at the Middle East, but it was his night off) and Becca (who works at the Sylvia Plath library at Smith College and handles all Sylvia's manuscripts all the time). Throughout the evening Heather and I had fun making fun of all the hipsters and their sexy beards and stuff ("That girl could fit inside that tote bag she's carrying--every time she walks by I want to fold her up and put her in there!").
We liked the first band okay. They were Certainly Sir. They didn't suck and in fact kind of grew on us throughout their set. I liked the song that had a chorus of (something like) "It's midnight again..." After their set Heather went for a walk and I went to the merch table. I got to talking to Caithlin from Rainer Maria (I'm amazed I had the courage to say anything, but considering she was the only person at the merch table I kind of had to talk to her if I wanted to buy something). They had a 2-disc set called "Anyone in Love with You (Already Knows)", and I noticed that one of the discs was a DVD of a show they played at the Cat's Cradle in Chapel Hill, so I asked her when that recording was from, and she said she thought it was 2002 (it's actually from early 2003). I said, I think I was at that show! And I told her how I'd seen them play at the Cat's Cradle twice when I lived in Greensboro. So that was pretty cool, and then of course I had to buy the thing because I had been there. (Now, however, I can't get the damn cd to play in my computer at work, and it's pissing me off.) Second opening band was Hail Social, and Brendan summed it up well when, at the end of their set, he clapped loudly and yelled "Yes! I love Franz Ferdinand!" They were more polished than the first band, but not very interesting and really kind of derivative. Meh at them.
So then Rainer Maria went on. They played a really solid set, I thought. The first time I saw them, back in 2001, they seemed unused to the performing thing and really just wanted to rock out. The second time I saw them, in March 2003, they were a lot showier, more into working the stage and putting on a good show (though they still rocked out). Last night they were a lot more relaxed, just kind of having fun with it. They played a lot of songs off the new album that's coming out this fall. They also played a lot of old favorites, and I bopped around. Heather and I enjoyed the way Kyle dances like he's gonna knock himself unconscious. Caithlin was terminally cute (I think she always is, though). After the show I bought myself a t-shirt, because I figure, here's an indie band I can really get behind, you know? I like them a lot, and there's not a ton of indie bands I've liked for as long as I've liked Rainer Maria. The shirt I got is brown, and it has a little tree on it that is shedding its leaves, but they're not leaves they're little hearts. It's really cute. I'm pleased. And Jorn picked me up after the show, which was really really sweet of him and which is a favor I'll return at some point when he goes to a show at the Middle East and wants a ride home.

And oh sweet jebus the whole wheat pizza at Pieworks.
I saw the Archers Of Loaf at the Cradle too.
Sigh...yeah, sometimes I miss Raleigh and Chapel Hill a lot.
