I think I've read this book at least twice before--I remember reading it once on its own, and then again when I reread the whole series when Plains of Passage came out. But amazon says Plains of Passage came out in 1991--I turned 12 that year, and I doubt I would have read this when I was younger than 12. So maybe I did only read it once before. Either way, it was a long time ago, and Ayla has always kind of stuck with me. She's one of those characters that you just think about sometimes, and I felt like I wanted to read this book again. I don't know if I'll reread the whole series (Auel is just a little too proud of her obviously extensive research into the flora and fauna around during this period, and the technology available to cave people [there was a five-page description of flint knapping, for goodness sake!], and damn does it get tedious), but I do want to pick up a copy of Valley of the Horses. That one was always my favorite, because Ayla has to survive on her own, and she sets up her own little cave and everything. I'm looking forward to reading that again.
