Oh, wow. What a good book this was. About two sisters (17 and 18) who lived with their parents in a house in the woods at the very end of the road, 32 miles from the closest town. And their mother dies of cancer, and in the next year or so after that the country supposedly goes to war and civilization as we know it breaks down. Their power goes out, phone lines go down, they run out of gasoline for the truck, and on their next trip to town they can't find anyone that they knew. The town is a ghost town with looting and sickness and no doctors or order anywhere. Not long after that, their dad is killed in an accident, and the two sisters are left all alone. The book chronicles what they do, how they survive and learn to live off the forest. A really beautiful book, very poetic in places, with a not-unexpected but interesting ending.
This was the second and last book that I borrowed from The Amy before I left Florida, so now I can send them back to her. Also, I looked at my books2006 list in memories and saw that I'm doing really well in terms of keeping my count up this year: 9 books in January, 9 in February, 8 in March, 9 in April, and 2 in May so far. I should hit 50 books sometime in June with no problem, which means I'll be right on track for 100 books total for the year (or more).
