Man, I want so badly to just curl up and be lazy. This morning was a struggle. But I was out of bed by 9, and outside doing my yoga routine at 9:20. I worked out for an hour, came in and had breakfast, then headed up to the attic. Worked until I wanted to punch things, which ended up being 45 minutes or so. But I cleaned out the area behind the clothes, which was the next big step, and I moved the board games back behind the clothes so now they're out of the way. Labelled some things, rearranged a few small things--anyway, it's neater. Crap, I just realized I should have been documenting this project with pictures all along. Hmm, I'll have to go take care of that right now.

Okay, I'm back. Here's what the attic looks like right now. Um, the walls look like cardboard. That's because they are.

This is the right side of the attic, the side that I have cleaned. Notice how neatly things are stacked and tucked right against the wall. There is floor space on this side of the attic (and a half-full bag of trash is sitting in that floor space). On the left side of the picture, you can see the clothes hanging up (in the front is my high school band jacket, white with green and yellow trim).

This is the left side of the attic. You can tell it is the same attic because you can see the other half of my band jacket on the right of this picture. This is how the whole attic looked before we started working on it. The coolest thing in this picture is Jem's neon convertible. I will not ever be getting rid of it.

Left side of the attic again. There is a second small room down there, above the porch. The ceiling is lower, which is why the stuff is almost touching the ceiling. This was my playroom when I was kid; I kept all my barbie stuff in there. You can see a bit of Jem's car again in the bottom of the picture, and towards the top, you can see the Voltron castle on top of that coffee table.

So that's the attic as it looks right now. Hopefully now you have an idea of just how much work I've done so far, and also just how much freakin' work I've got left to do.

Now for the fun part--here are the awesome, awesome old books which are Today's Attic Find! I wish I had found them before my road trip because my mom went to the Antiques Roadshow while I was away and these would have been great to take. I found a grocery bag full of oversized children's picture books, mostly from the 1950s but some older, mostly Christmas books but some others as well. Here are some pictures.

These books each have their own box; Davey comes with a whole nativity diorama.

Oh, Franky, that naughty little elf! The Night Before Christmas book is one of the ones I'm sure is older. A piece of it flaked off in my hand while I flipped through it.

Boy, does Santa look excited about his visit to Mother Goose! That one's dated 1953, and it's a pop-up book; Princess is dated 1958, I think.

Okay, this one's my favorite. No date, but the back says it was made for a London publisher in Czechoslovakia. It is also a pop-up book, and many of the pop-ups move.

Here's one of the pages of the Sleeping Beauty book. It shows how the castle staff fell asleep. The old woman on the left is moveable--you can make her stir the porridge. The man on the right is moveable also, so you can make him hit the boy!

Here the prince finds Sleeping Beauty. The Prince is moveable--you move him forward, and as he passes the pillar he leans in to kiss the Princess.

I am so incredibly pleased to have found these. I can't wait to show my mom when she gets home.
