This was interesting. Gemm is a citizen of a future society that relies on conformity for peace. Everyone wears masks, so everyone looks alike, and they all drink seratonin shakes. It's mellow. So when Gemm discovers he has a passion for music, it's not a good thing. No one's supposed to have any passion at all, and music is against the law. He's a deviant, and has to be cured. For his "cure", Gemm is filled with the memories of a boy named Johannes, who also loved music, who lived in 1348...
An interesting premise all the way around, and decently researched historical fiction. Worth checking out, especially if you're interested in medieval or Jewish history--or creepy utopias, for that matter.
