God, today's Scrabble game. It started off well enough: me, Tariq, Kari, Christine, and Lou all played, so we had a good group. I pulled the A, so I started the game. Best I could summon up from my letters was GAY. 14 points with the double-word block, so not too bad. Next I played SIEVE (16 points), which was well received, but then I pulled the Z and honest to God had nowhere to play it. I was trying to look for a spot for ZOA, but ended up just sticking an I on Tariq's Q to make QI, our traditional cop-out move, for 11 points. Next turn I still had the freakin' Z and nowhere to put it, so I placed RAID with a vertical AY for 12 points. On my next turn I finally found a spot for the Z, with a vertical ZOOM on a double word, also forming MO horizontally, for 34 points.
After that turn, I picked the last of the letters from the bag, and found before me HANKER and a blank tile. Before I could even get excited about the possibilities, Tariq played UNLOAD(S) with the other blank tile, also forming WAGER(S), and using up all his letters, getting the 50-point bonus and finishing the game in one fell swoop, the jerk. We were all floored. I lost 13 points on the letters in my hand, for a final score of 74 points. Lou had a score in the 80s, Kari ended in the 30s, I can't remember Christine's score, and Tariq ended up with 373723 or so. He's won the past few weeks. He doesn't even bring the Scrabble crown to games with him anymore (but I suspect he's lost it or hidden it or something). Well, there's always next week.
Tonight: an editorial reception, at the Union League a few blocks from here. They have a strict business casual dress code. I'm wearing the brown velvet pants, which suddenly like all my other pants are now big in the waist. WTF? I didn't lose that much weight with that stomach flu, and I'm pretty darn sure I gained it back in Denver this weekend. Sigh. I need to get back into yoga. I researched that some last night, and found there's a studio a few blocks from my office on 16th that has 45-minute Ashtanga classes at lunchtime, and they offer a newbie rate of $25 for 5 classes. Yeah buddy. I'd rather find something closer to home, in my neighborhood, so I could go after work and on Saturdays and not have to worry about getting back to the office, but for $25 it's worth it to try it and see what I think. There's a studio that sounds really good about two miles from my house, but I want something walkable. We'll see.
