supercheesegirl: (books - star paper)
Journal info: The Florida Review, published twice yearly by the department of English at the University of Central Florida. Website: www.flreview.com.

I read half of this last week and finished it this week. I don't remember too too much about what all's in it. Two Gary Fincke poems, which is why I snagged this particular issue instead of another. I heart Gary; he's the best. Let's see, what else was good?

- Dana Cann's story "Clockwise" was INCREDIBLY AMAZING. The sort of story that makes me wish with all my heart I could write fiction. So beautiful, so moving, so sad.
- Michelle Valois's essay "The Myth of Mangos" was quite good.
- I'm really interested by Roy Kesey. His story "The Joke" was terrifying. I had to keep checking the TOC to make sure it was fiction.
- Laura Lee Smith's story "Rollback Rising" had a trueness to it. Her characters took themselves utterly seriously while being ridiculous, and she portrayed them as people, not as jokes. That can be hard to do.

Good poems: Kathleen Rooney's "Those Whom the Gods Wish to Destroy". Robert Gibb's "There Were Flowers Also in Hell". Linda Aldritch's "Water". Elinor Benedict's "Blue Food".

Yeah, sure, I'll probably send them some work. I'm creating rather a backlog here of journals I'll yeah sure send some work to. I should get on that.

Yay, that's my school!

I read poetry submissions for them back in the summer of '03. You should definitely submit things for them.
